The Rettbergsaue ( pronounced: Rettbergs-Aue ) is a natural Wiesbadener Rhine island , which lies between the main fairway of the Rhine in the north and the wax bleach arm in the south, in which the border between Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate runs.

location

The Rettbergsaue is around 3,100 meters long and up to 400 meters wide and, with 68 hectares, is one of the largest islands around which the Rhine flows unhindered on both sides. For traffic on the federal motorway 643 , the floodplain is spanned by the Schiersteiner Bridge . On the east side of the bridge there is a cycle and walkway with stairs leading to the island. However, this staircase will not be available from 2013 to probably 2021, as this area will be closed to the public as part of the new construction of the Schiersteiner Bridge.

The island opposite the Biebrich Castle is largely covered with trees and has a rich bird and plant world. In 1997, for example, 19 occupied black kite nests were counted. About 90% of the island are under nature protection. Part of the area is used for agriculture.

natural reserve

In 1978, a 52.6321 hectare nature reserve was designated on the island , the oldest on the list of nature reserves in Wiesbaden . It served to protect the island as a breeding and resting place for endangered bird species and rare hardwood floodplain forest, which consists of ash , elm , sycamore maple , norwegian maple and pedunculate oak . In 1984 the area was expanded to 67.78 hectares.

To Rettbergsaue a 71.08 is since July 2001 hectares large FFH area reported that part of the network Natura 2000 is. It includes the island in the Rhine with softwood and hardwood meadows, bushes fringes, meadow meadows, fringing and schlei vegetation, bank and flushing fringe biotopes, pioneer and flood turf, nitrophilic perennial communities and landfall biotopes. The species that are protected are the kingfisher , red- backed killer , woodlark , nightingale , bluethroat , black and red kite , honey buzzard , common redstart and gray , medium and small woodpecker .

The Rettbergsaue lies like other Rhine wetlands from Kühkopf over the Inselrhein to Bacharach in the Middle Rhine Valley in the 1269 hectare FFH area "Migratory fish areas in the Rhine".

history

The island is a river embankment of the Rhine made of clay and sand after the last glacial period . Until the middle of the 19th century, the island consisted of two parts, the Biebricher Wörth and the Schiersteiner Wörth . The western part, which was called Karthäuser-Aue in the late Middle Ages , was acquired by its namesake, Baron Carl von Rettberg , in 1832 . The Nassau lieutenant and adjutant of the Duke took over the island from the Nassau state and ran cattle and horses there. For financial reasons, he had to return the property to Nassau a few years later. At the western end, near two arms of the Old Rhine , the Schierstein lido was built in 1914, and the Biebrich lido on the north bank in 1921. Due to the heavy pollution of the Rhine, both facilities were closed in 1962.

Since then, they have served as recreational areas where you can camp and take advantage of the white sandy beaches. Bathing is officially forbidden, although the water would meanwhile be suitable for bathing again at normal water level without the pollution that occurs during flooding . Due to the dog ban and away from road traffic, the Rettbergsaue is a popular local recreation area, especially for families with children, with its large children's playground, a football and barbecue area, the island café, an open-air bowling alley and other attractions. The two leisure areas are expected to be accessible again from 2021 via the stairs from the new Schiersteiner Bridge. The Tamara passenger ferry , which departs from Schierstein Harbor and on the banks of the Rhine in Wiesbaden-Biebrich , operates in the summer months. The rest of the island is inaccessible to strangers.

At the beginning of the 1970s, a local recreation area with holiday apartments, riding stables, sports facilities, seminar house, café and circular hiking trails was to be set up on the floodplain and connected to Biebrich by a cable car . There were also plans to build a power station. Both of these were prevented by the establishment of the nature reserve.

On 23/24 In October 2009 a sewer was dredged by the THW Wiesbaden. The purpose of the action is to clear the side arm of bad smelling mud and to revitalize the lido.
