The Idar-Oberstein station is the largest station of the city of Idar-Oberstein and is located in the city center. It belongs to station category 4 and is the largest station in the Birkenfeld district .

history

The Idar-Oberstein train station was opened on December 15, 1859 as the Oberstein train station . At that time there was only one connection to today's Binger district of Bingerbrück . In 1860 the connection to Saarland was established, which enabled train journeys to Neunkirchen (Saar) , where there was a connection to the Palatinate Ludwig Railway. Later there were connections from Idar-Oberstein to the Glantalbahn , to Baumholder and to today's district town of Birkenfeld .

As early as May 1884, the trains ran four times a day between Bingerbrück and Metz . Long- distance trains were already running between Frankfurt am Main and Paris via Idar-Oberstein around 1900 . In addition, there were long-distance trains between Berlin and Paris around 1910 . In 1913 the station was renamed Oberstein-Idar , then again in 1934 Idar-Oberstein . While traffic was very limited during the First World War, the station was even hit by a train on the Wiesbaden - Calais distance in 1926 . In the 1930s it was used by several long-distance trains: these were the D 132 Frankfurt – Nancy, the D 138 Frankfurt – Paris and the D 144 Wiesbaden – Paris. While long-distance train connections declined after the Second World War , they experienced another renaissance in the 1980s. Between 1985 and 1991 two pairs of long-distance trains drove again via Idar-Oberstein. In addition to the Göttingen –Frankfurt am Main– Saarbrücken express train , this was the Frankfurt am Main – Idar-Oberstein – Saarbrücken – Paris express train , which drove its Corail coaches via Idar-Oberstein. Since 1991 Idar-Oberstein has no long-distance traffic connection.

The Nahe Valley Railway forms one of the main axes of rail passenger transport in Rhineland-Palatinate . The station used to be the starting point for the Idar-Oberstein tram (1900 to 1956) and the Idar-Oberstein trolleybus (1956 to 1969).

The city of Idar-Oberstein bought the station area and extensively renovated it for € 900,000. In addition to the redesign of the station forecourt into a modern bus station, the building itself was also renovated and an inclusion café was set up in it, which is operated by Lebenshilfe. For local public transport, the station is the gateway to the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.

construction

The station has belonged to the city of Idar-Oberstein since 2014, which it acquired from DB. It has a reception building and a bus station. In the course of restoration works were platforms renewed and elevators barrier-free accessible. The platforms were also equipped with a guidance system for the blind. In November 2008 the building was completely repainted and decorated with pictures of the city's sights. In 2014 the toilet facilities were renewed and reopened. In 2016, the station forecourt, which was named Willy-Brandt-Platz, was renewed. In addition, a new central bus station was built, from which city buses and intercity buses run to the regions of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park . The station was made barrier-free and a guidance system for the blind was installed, which leads from the station directly to the pedestrian zone via a traffic-calmed entrance. Since then, the station has been handicapped accessible.

Rail operations

With the 2014/2015 timetable change in December 2014, vlexx GmbH , a subsidiary of Regentalbahn , was also awarded the contract for rail operations in the Nahe valley . She took over this from DB Regio . Offered regional express trains (Frankfurt-) Mainz-Saarbrücken and regional trains Mainz-Idar-Oberstein. The station is also a transfer point for the Heimbach – Baumholder line, which was reopened in 2015 .

Bus operation

From May 4, 2015, the station forecourt and the central bus station were redesigned in a construction period of one year for 1.6 million euros. The transport company Idar-Oberstein (VIO) operates the city bus service. From the bus station on the station forecourt, seven bus routes run to the individual parts of the city. There is also the collective call taxi (AST) for certain times and lines . The ORN operates the lines 320 Idar-Oberstein-Baumholder and 330 Idar-Oberstein via Birkenfeld to Neubrücke as regional lines. On one school day, 261 buses serve the ZOB (as of May 20, 2011).
