The station Baumholder is the terminus of the railway line Heimbach Baumholder . The station is in the center of the town of Baumholder in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Birkenfeld . Between 1981 and December 2014 it was used exclusively for the freight transport of the US Army and the German Armed Forces .

history

A Prussian law on the construction of a Heimbach – Baumholder small railway began in 1908 with the construction of the railway line . The line was finally opened on December 15, 1912. Despite the First World War , which broke out a short time later, traffic on the branch line developed quite well.

After the Baumholder military training area was built in 1937 and 1938, the Heimbach – Baumholder route experienced an upswing. In this context, the tracks in Baumholder station were expanded considerably. The station has a head ramp and a side ramp, and there are another three head ramps in the separate US Army station. Due to the large number of tracks, there are many shunting options.

Due to declining passenger numbers, passenger traffic was discontinued on May 31, 1981. Freight traffic has continued to this day with regard to the military training area. Buses took over the passenger transport.

On the occasion of the Rhineland-Palatinate Day 2007 in Baumholder , regional trains ran between Heimbach and Baumholder for the first time since 1981 from June 29, 2007 to July 1, 2007 .

In its meeting on December 10, 2008, the regional rail passenger transport association Rhineland-Palatinate South (ZSPNV Süd) decided to reactivate the Heimbach – Baumholder route for the 2014/2015 timetable change in December 2014 for passenger traffic. As part of the tender for the "Southwest Diesel Network", it is planned that trains will run between Baumholder and Kirn every hour . At the end of February 2012, ZSPNV Süd awarded the planned transports to the Regentalbahn , which will use Alstom Coradia LINT 54 and 81 vehicles there . The trains are operated by their subsidiary " vlexx GmbH " on behalf of the Regentalbahn . In this context, Baumholder station was completely renovated in summer 2014. In addition to the renovation of the house platform , a makeshift platform was built. In addition, the entire area around the station will be renewed.
