history

In 1926, the sculptor Balthasar Schmitt from Aschach (now part of Bad Bocklet ) created the Steinbach Madonna for the hotelier Carl Steinbach, the tenant of the town's hunting grounds, and his wife Amalie. When making it, Schmitt was guided by the house Madonna, which he had previously made for his parents' house in Aschach.

The Steinbach Madonna was attached to the picture oak near Ilgenwiese and Ilgenhalle. Originally, the sculpture was attached to a tree opposite today's picture oak, but it had to be felled in 1955. The Steinbach Madonna itself has since been replaced by a copy; the original is in the forestry office.
