geography

location

The 382  m above sea level. NHN mountain is located in the northwest of Bad Kissingen and connects to the Garitz district . To the north it is bounded by the Ilgenberg and the 312 meter high stone dome, which in turn is connected to the state road St 2792 to the Klaushof wildlife park and to the Poppenroth district and the Kaskadental . On the eastern edge, the Staffelsberg is bordered by the streets Bismarckstraße and In der Au, to which the Rosengarten (Bismarckstraße) and the airfield (In der Au) connect.

geology

Remains of shell limestone , deposits of the former shell limestone sea, can still be found on the crests of the Staffelberg . There is also an approximately 1,000 m long and 250 wide floe made of coarse-grained red sandstone .

history

The name of the Staffelsberg is related to the viticulture that once took place here. The winegrowers created steps (staggered) on the slope to prevent the soil from sliding down.

The " Heidenopferstein " located on a promenade on the eastern edge of the Staffelberg was originally a boulder that was in the fire control department in the Euerdorfer Forest. In the Aura monastery at that time (today's ruins of Aura ) an attempt was made to carve a baptismal font from the stone; under which this happened has not been proven with absolute certainty. In the 1880s, the Heidenopferstein came to its current location on Staffelsberg.

On August 29, 1883, the Ludwigsturm , named after King Ludwig I and now also a listed building, was inaugurated on the Staffelsberg . Next to the tower, which was designed as a lookout point, there is now a training center for the Würzburg Diocesan Association of St. George Scouts .
