Thelma Stovall
Thelma Loyace Hawkins Stovall (born April 1, 1919 in Munfordville , Hart County , Kentucky , † February 4, 1994 in Louisville , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1975 and 1979 she was Lieutenant Governor of the State of Kentucky.
Career
Thelma Stovall came to Louisville in her youth. In the early 1930s she worked for Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation to make a living for herself and her family during the Great Depression . She also came into contact with the trade union movement, to which she remained connected all her life. Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . Between 1950 and 1956 she was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives . In 1956, 1964 and 1972 she took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions . From 1952 to 1956 she headed her party's youth organization in Kentucky. Between 1960 and 1964 and again from 1968 to 1972 she held the office of Kentucky State Treasurer , which corresponds to the Treasury Secretary of that state. She was Secretary of State of Kentucky from 1956 to 1960 and between 1964 and 1968 and between 1972 and 1975 . She then held this office again between 1972 and 1975. So she held top positions in the state government of Kentucky from 1956 to 1979, including her time as Lieutenant Governor.
In 1975, Stovall was elected Lieutenant Governor of the State of Kentucky as the first woman to side with Julian Carroll . She held this office between 1975 and 1979. She was Deputy Governor and Chairwoman of the State Senate . During one of the governor's several missions, she also granted pardons. In 1979 she ran unsuccessfully in her party's primary election for governor. After that it no longer appeared politically. She died in Louisville on February 4, 1994.
