John Caldwell (politician)

John Caldwell (born 1757 in Prince Edward County , Colony of Virginia , †  November 19, 1804 in Frankfort , Kentucky ) was an American politician . In 1804 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Kentucky.

Career

Nothing is known of John Caldwell's youth and schooling. He grew up during the British colonial era and lived through the American Revolution . After Kentucky split off from Virginia, he was elected to the local Senate in 1792 . He later became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson .

In 1804 Caldwell was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky alongside Christopher Greenup . He only held this office for a few months until his death on November 19 of the same year. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. He died of a stroke while chairing a meeting of that panel. The Caldwell County in Kentucky is named after him.
