The Birkenfeld train station was the only train station in the district town of Birkenfeld (Nahe) in Rhineland-Palatinate . It was located in the south of the city on the Birkenfeld Railway , which was closed in 1991 and whose terminus it represented. Only parts of the reception building remain of the station facilities .

history

The Birkenfeld station was with the opening of the branch line from Neubrücke (Nahe) taken to Birkenfeld on 15 October 1880 in operation, thereby linking the county seat to the Nahe Valley Railway was ensured and thus to the national railway network. The Birkenfelder Lokalbahn GmbH was the builder and owner of the line, the operational management was contractually incumbent on the Prussian State Railways and from 1920 on the Deutsche Reichsbahn . The latter waived a renewal of the management contract in 1932, so that the Birkenfeld local railway took over the operation on its own from that time.

After the end of the Second World War , the Birkenfeld local railway lost its importance, as trade with the nearby Saar area was restricted. This crisis of the now renamed Birkenfelder Eisenbahn GmbH was not overcome until the 1950s . From the 1960s onwards, several parallel bus routes were built.

Economic problems at DEGUSSA AG and the Birkenfelder Ziegelei, which were part of the railroad, in the 1970s and 1980s , as well as decreasing passenger numbers, ultimately led to the closure and dismantling of the railway line . The inevitable total shutdown took place on September 30, 1991. Passenger traffic came to a standstill in 1962. The entire railway infrastructure was then dismantled and a cycle path was set up on the route .

architecture

The station building itself was built in 1898. In the 20th century it was valued as the “gateway to the world”. However, since its closure, the station building has become less popular. Various initiatives are trying to bring the building back to life. It was used several times as an art object and its former function was emphasized by placing a locomotive in the vicinity.

The station building was to be extensively renovated from 2010, as several structural defects were discovered, but the building was to be retained. 163,800 euros were estimated for the renovation. The train station should become a jewel or cultural station . The preserved station building is not classified as a cultural monument in accordance with the Rhineland-Palatinate Monument Protection Act.
