The Neubrücke – Birkenfeld railway was a five-kilometer branch line from the Neubrücke (Nahe) station to the district town of Birkenfeld (Nahe) in the Hunsrück .

history

The owner of the line was the Birkenfelder Lokalbahn GmbH (later Birkenfelder Eisenbahn GmbH ). Its shareholders were the city of Birkenfeld with 72 percent and Degussa with 28 percent. The line was opened on October 5, 1880. The capital of the principality of the same name (part of the state) , which belonged to the Grand Duchy (Land) of Oldenburg until 1937 , was connected to the Bingen – Saarbrücken railway that was put into operation in 1860 by the Rhein-Nahe Railway Company .

From May 1, 1922, 4th class was also offered on the route and the (old) 2nd class was no longer available on all trains for the winter timetable 1922/23. They only led the 3rd and 4th grade. The line was operated by the state railway until January 16, 1933, then by the newly founded Birkenfelder Lokalbahn-Gesellschaft mbH itself.

Degussa ran a Holzverkohlungswerk in bridges , which by a factory siding was connected to the railway station Birkenfeld. With the shutdown of the plant, it left the GmbH. Since July 19, 1969, the city owned all shares of the local railway.

On December 31, 1962, passenger traffic was shifted from rail to the railway's own bus operation, which had been running regular services since October 2, 1955. The last modest freight traffic was served until September 30, 1991. On December 31, 1994 the line was closed . Then the tracks were dismantled.

A cycle and footpath was laid on the former embankment .
