Karol Castillo (* August 29, 1989 as Karol Estephanie Castillo Pinillos in Trujillo , Peru ; † April 10, 2013 in Australia ) was a Peruvian beauty queen and model who was elected Miss Peru in 2008 and then took part in the Miss Universe competition that year in Nha Trang , Vietnam .

life and career

Castillo was born in the summer of 1989 as the daughter of Luis Castillo and Zoila Pinillos in the city of Trujillo, the capital of the La Libertad region and the second largest metropolitan area after the state capital Lima . Her siblings include the two brothers Paulo and Bruno, with whom she grew up together in northern Peru. She began her career as a model at a young age and was there among other things in 2007, when she was now 18 years old as a candidate for the Miss La Libertad election . At that time, she was 1.82 m tall, weighed 56 kg and measured 90 - 62 - 96. The northern Peruvian took part in the Miss Teen Peru election as a 15-year-old, but was not the winner emerge. In 2008, the psychology student at the Universidad César Vallejo in Lima took part in the Miss Peru election and was able to prevail against the competition there. With this victory, she automatically qualified for the Miss Universe election, which will also take place this year in Nha Trang, Vietnam. On April 10, 2013, Castillo was found dead in her hotel bed in Australia ; she died of cardiac arrest in her sleep . An early companion of Castillo's, Diego Alcalde Sangalli, who prepared and organized various beauty contests in Peru, found the 23-year-old's body. After her death, he reported that he had previously known about the heart problems. She had come to Australia three weeks before her death to help prepare for Miss Teen Australia . Her body was later transferred from Australia to her native Peru and buried there.
