Oberstein is a district of the city of Idar-Oberstein in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate .
geography
The district forms part of the core city area. It consists of the areas of Altstadt , Hohl , Struth , Finsterheck and Barbararing . The Nahe river and the federal highway 41 , which completely covers the river as the Nahe high road , run through it .
history
The Oberstein district developed out of the imperial direct rule of Oberstein. The Lords of Stein (Oberstein), first mentioned in 1075, had their seat above the later built rock church , at Bosselstein Castle , which was mentioned as early as the 12th century and is known as the "Old Castle". In 1865 Oberstein was granted city rights. After 1815 Oberstein was part of the Principality of Birkenfeld , which was an exclave of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg .
On October 1, 1933, Oberstein and its neighboring communities were merged to form the town of Idar-Oberstein, and in 1969/70 additional districts were added.

In the old town is the pedestrian zone, the train station and the historic market square with a view of the rock church and the ruins of Oberstein Castle and Bosselstein Castle . Furthermore, the city theater. At the Barbararing stands the Klotzberg barracks, which is part of the artillery school of the Bundeswehr . The city's largest cemetery, called Almerich, is located between Oberstein and Nahbollenbach. The municipal indoor swimming pool is located on the border between Idar and Oberstein. One of the two sports fields is in the Finsterheck area, the second is on the Volkesberg on the edge of the Baumholder military training area , where the VfR's dog field is also located. The German Mineral Museum is located at the foot of the old town, next to which there is also the memorial for the killed Jews. The city's tourist information center is on the market square. The Edelsteinerlebniswelt is at the head of the pedestrian zone near the bus station. The city archives and the city library are also close by. Between the ruins of Bosselstein Castle and the Old Castle there is a small castle pond, which is a popular excursion destination. The Nahe-Felsen-Weg , a dream loop for hikers, also runs on the edge of the district . There is an animal shelter in the Hohl area .
The city administration is located in Georg-Maus-Straße. Guard 1 of the Idar-Oberstein volunteer fire brigade is located in Hommelstrasse. The tax office and the customs office as well as the police are in the main street. The Obersteiner Baugenossenschaft (OBG) maintains its office in Mainzerstraße, renting out apartments throughout the city of Idar-Oberstein. The district court and the employment agency are also located in Mainzer Straße. There is an office of the DGB in Wilhelmstrasse. The base of the district association of the Red Cross is in the Schönlautenbach. The Kreissparkasse has its head office on the Idar square. The deanery for the Birkenfeld district is located on Rilchenberg.
The transport company Idar-Oberstein drives the various areas of Oberstein with several lines that depart from the central bus station.

One of Sherlock Holmes' opponents is Hugo Oberstein. He is a German spy who lives in London . Oberstein is mentioned in the story "The Bruce Padington Plans and the Second Spot". The character was invented by the British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle .
