The castle Bosselstein even Burgstein or Old Castle , the ruins of a hilltop castle above the upper district Oberstein from Idar-Oberstein in the district of Birkenfeld in Hunsrück .
The castle is located on the Kirchenfelsen , a rugged rocky reef above the Felsenkirche of Idar-Oberstein, above the Nahe valley and next to Oberstein Castle .
Bosselstein Castle was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Stein (Oberstein) and was first mentioned in 1197. From 1600 the castle was no longer inhabited, fell into disrepair and in 1945 came to Rhineland-Palatinate as a ruin .
The stump of the round keep and the remains of the palace and the curtain wall are still preserved from the castle complex .
