Idar is a district of the city of Idar-Oberstein in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It forms part of the core city area.

Geographical location

Idar is located in the Idarvorberge natural area, which is part of the Upper Middle England . It consists of the areas of Altstadt , Lay , Finkenberg and Vollmersbachtal . The Idarbach runs through Idar . Neighboring districts are Regulshausen in the north-northeast, Göttschied in the east, Oberstein in the south-southeast, Algenrodt in the west and Tiefenstein in the north-west. In addition, the municipality of Vollmersbach borders in the north .

history

The settlement of Idar can be proven up to the earliest times by archaeological finds. The place Idar to the right of the Idarbach belonged to the Idarbann with the places Enzweiler , Algenrodt, Mackenrodt , Hettenrodt , Hettstein, Obertiefenbach and Kirschweiler. The area belonged predominantly to the Lords of Oberstein and thus shares the history with Oberstein, but in Tiefenbach and Kirschweiler in particular the Wild and Rhine Counts and the Tholey Abbey had goods and other rights. In 1865 Idar was granted city rights. On October 1, 1933, Idar was merged with its neighboring communities to form the town of Idar-Oberstein, and in 1969/1970 additional districts were added.

The Schleiferplatz, which is part of the pedestrian zone and leads to the Maler-Wild-Platz, is centrally located in Idar. The appearance of the district is characterized by the building of the Diamond and Gemstone Exchange Idar-Oberstein (stock exchange high-rise) , the gemstone spinning top and the Fissler works. There are many commercial operations in Idar that are active in the gemstone industry. The German Gemstone Museum is on the main street . The Lay area is a residential part of Idar, in which the city football stadium Im Haag is also located. Finkenberg is an industrial area with several companies. The Vollmersbachtal is a school center that turns into a commercial area. Idar is home to the second general high school in the city, the Gymnasium an der Heinzenwies ; also the Realschule Plus, the vocational school for business, the Harald-Fissler-School and the college for gemstone and jewelry design. The Bismarck Tower stands on the border between Lay and Vollmersbachtal . There are several day-care centers in Idar, some of which are run by the city and church. The village has a large central cemetery. There is a multi-purpose hall next to the primary school in Heidenteil.

The IHK Koblenz has its office for the district of Birkenfeld on Hauptstrasse, where the Federal Association of the Gemstone and Diamond Industry is also located. The LSB Rhineland-Palatinate's Sport Education Center maintains an advice center in Hohwies. OIE-AG, a subsidiary of RWE, has its corporate headquarters in Hauptstrasse, where AOK's regional customer center is also located . The district association of the CDU operates its office on Kobachstrasse. The church district Obere Nahe has its administrative meeting on Vollmersbachstrasse. The Birkenfeld district job center is on the main road.

In the Tiefenstein – Idar – Oberstein section, the federal road 422 runs through Idar . The Idar-Oberstein transport company takes several lines to the district from the central bus station, which is located in the Oberstein district at Idar-Oberstein train station .
