course

The Idarbach rises in the Hunsrück on the edge of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park . Its source is in the municipality of Allenbach at the interface between the Black Forest high forest and the Idarwald near a saddle that extends between the Erbeskopf ( 816.32  m ), the highest mountain in Rhineland-Palatinate, and its north-eastern neighbor Kahlheid ( 766.2  m ) m ) extends.

Near the source, the Idarbach passes under the federal highway 269 . From the junction of the B 269 with the Landesstraße  164– B 422 road, which is also near the source , the stream flows parallel to the B 422 to its mouth. The first 10 km it runs northeast through the municipal areas of Wirschweiler and Sensweiler . Then the Idarbach bends to the southeast and takes the from Steinbach dam flowing approach Steinbach on. After that, he walks a short distance through the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park on the border between Sensweiler and Kempfeld . Then the brook flows through the municipality of Kirschweiler .

Then the Idarbach reaches the urban area of Idar-Oberstein a little before leaving the Saar-Hunsrück nature park near the Tiefenstein district . It flows through  the Idar district - largely channeled since the 1970s .

Finally, the Idarbach flows in the Oberstein district below the federal highway 41 into the Rhine inflow near the Nahe from the southwest .
