The Steinbachtalsperre in Rhineland-Palatinate is located on the Steinbach near Idar-Oberstein in the Hunsrück , in the Birkenfeld district . It was put into operation in 1966 and is used to supply the city of Idar-Oberstein with drinking water .

The barrier structure is a stone embankment dam with an asphalt concrete outer seal. The dam is slightly curved. The dam has an 8 m high pre- dam , also a dam with an asphalt concrete outer seal . A small hydroelectric power station with an output of 12 kW is connected.

The reservoir is fenced and not open to the public, the area is a water protection zone. A view of the reservoir is only possible to a very limited extent through the entrance gate.

For drinking water treatment, the already quite clean and soft water (1.2 dH total hardness ) is hardened with carbonic acid and calcium carbonate to approx. 3 dH, then flocculation with aluminum sulfate , demanganization with potassium permanganate , filtration and disinfection with chlorine dioxide in the waterworks at the foot of the dam.
