Kirschweiler is a municipality in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Herrstein-Rhaunen community .
geography
Kirschweiler is located a few kilometers northwest of Idar-Oberstein in the Hunsrück . 56 percent of the municipal area is forested. Other neighboring communities are Hettenrodt and Kempfeld with its district Katzenloch . To the northwest is the Kirschweiler Fortress nature reserve .
The residential areas Auf der Lüh and Kirschweiler Mühle also belong to Kirschweiler.
Kirschweiler is a national park municipality in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park .

Municipal council
The council in Kirschweiler consists of 16 council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Karl-Otto Dreher became the local mayor of Kirschweiler in 2014. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in office for a further five years with a share of the vote of 74.33%.
Dreher's predecessor Hans-Werner Moser held the office from 1997 to 2014.
Culture and sights
There are still many gemstone cutters in the village, the majority of which can also be visited, a spacious golf course run by the Edelstein Hunsrück e. V. and two gemstone fountains in the town center. The "Burekirb" is celebrated in Kirschweiler every year.

Economy and Infrastructure
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1272 and the abundance of water of the Idarbach flowing through the valley was the basis for the development into the “village of gem cutters”. Even today, the commercial life of Kirschweiler is characterized by gemstone cutting and goldsmithing businesses. Landmarks are the gemstone fountain in the middle of the village and the crystal fountain at the Hans-Becker-Halle.
On the outskirts of Kirschweiler there is a retirement home run by the Elisabeth Foundation with 63 care places and 6 places for assisted living.
