Vollmersbach is a municipality in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Herrstein-Rhaunen community .

Vollmersbach is in the conservation area Hochwald - Idarwald . In the south the community borders on the city of Idar-Oberstein .

history

Until the end of the 18th century, the place belonged to the Oberstein dominion, which was last jointly owned by the Counts of Limburg-Styrum and the Elector of Trier .

Vollmersbach has always been known for two sports. Tennis and field handball were already being played in Vollmersbach around 1900 . Today TV Vollmersbach plays tennis with many youth teams and a strong men's team. In handball, TV Vollmersbach has been playing since 2000 in a merger with the Idar gymnastics club in the Rhineland handball association . In the meantime there is no longer a men's team at SG Idar / Vollmersbach. In the women's division, the first team plays in the district league, the second team in the district league. There are also some youth teams. Since 2017 there has also been a beach court on the sports ground, where the sports of beach volleyball, beach soccer and beach tennis are practiced.

Cultural associations

Misfortunes

One of the greatest accidents occurred in the Second World War on the night of August 9th to 10th, 1943, when a British handley page Halifax of the pilot Jim Pestridge shot down over Idar-Oberstein during an attack on Mannheim by the German night fighter pilot Oblt. Johannes Engels and fell into a meadow in Vollmersbach. Three of the four crew members died in the rubble. Pestridge saved himself by parachute, landed near Nahbollenbach and was later arrested at Birkenfeld train station (today: Neubrücke (Nahe) ).

There was another plane crash on May 29, 2003, when an ultralight aircraft caught fire at a height of 300 meters above the town. The plane finally crashed on a parachute about 50 meters from the houses near the Vollmersbach sports field on a meadow. Both inmates survived seriously injured. The pilot had a fatal accident in the French Maritime Alps in 2007 after two gliders collided.

Attractions

• Vollmersbach is located on the touristic route Deutsche Edelsteinstrasse and is the hometown of the German Gemstone Queen 1992–1994 Kerstin Huth.
• The Andreasbrunnen or "Ennerschbure" is located within the Vollmersbacher corridor to the Tiefensteiner ban border. In earlier times, its water was always said to have healing properties. Around 1880 there were people seeking healing, from whom they laid down gifts of thanks as a means of repentance - mostly three white things, an egg, a piece of silver money and a white children's shirt.
• The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig runs through Vollmersbach .
