About this picture
The village is located in the Kyrbachtal , with the Idarkopf in the background

Oberkirn is a municipality in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Herrstein-Rhaunen community .

geography

Oberkirn is located in the valley of the Kyrbach , between the Lützelsoon in the southeast and the Idarwald in the southwest, in the middle of the Hunsrück . Neighboring communities are Rhaunen , Gösenroth , Schwerbach , Lindenschied , Rohrbach , Woppenroth and Hausen .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1335 as Overkehr . Oberkirn was part of the parish of Hausen until it merged with Rhaunen. Other places belonging to Hausen were Schwerbach and until 1969 Lindenschied and Woppenroth and formerly Gösenroth and Laufersweiler .

The municipality mentions on its website: “A legend says that Oberkirn was once called Oberhausen and Oberhausen bei Kirn Oberkirn. At some point the names were swapped when writing a certificate. However, there is still no scientific proof of this. ”For example, the neighboring village of Hausen Oberhausen would be linguistically assigned and Kirn Oberkirn. Against this, however, speaks that the respective place names in the vernacular were certainly not based on an incorrect document or would have changed because of it.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Oberkirn
Blazon : "In a divided shield above in gold a red mythical animal with a wolf's head and wide open wings, covered with a black wolf hook , below in blue a golden bishop's staff accompanied by two silver buckles."
Justification of the coat of arms: The mythical animal refers to the former affiliation to the Wild and Rhine Counties and corresponds to the earlier court seal of the Rhaunen High Court . In the lower half of the shield is the crosier to Lothar Karl Franz Josef Schenk von Schmidt Burg , canon to Liege , Chorbishop to Trier and Mr. reminded to Oberkirn. The two silver buckles stand for the Schmidtburg office . According to a list from the 16th century, the place Oberkirn belonged to this office. Together with other places, Oberkirn had its own in-court, presided over by the Burgmanns Jakob and Henne Braun von Schmidtburg.
