The Kyrbach is a body of water almost 24 km long in the central Hunsrück . It rises as Binger Bach near Kappel at about 500  m above sea level. NN and then flows in a north-south direction. From Kludenbach he calls himself Brühlbach, past Ober Kostenz Kehrbach and from Nieder Kostenz then Kyrbach. After the tributary of the Idarbach in Hausen , the water is called Hahnenbach . The Hahnenbach flows into the Nahe near Kirn.

Surname

Kyr is a Celtic word that means water. The place Kirn also derives its name from the brook, just like some desert areas in the upper reaches of the Kappel district: Kyr (courtyard at the Kyrbachquelle) and Kirweiler (for the Dill district). The town of Kirchberg, which in old documents up to the 16th century was called Kirberg, Kyrperch and the like, probably got its name from the brook.

Expansion and use

The flood plains in the upper reaches were very swampy, for amelioration of the creek has been straightened and moved to a slate bed. They would like to take this back down today. The first mill was the Kappeler Mühle, where the Hunsrückhöhenstrasse bridged the stream. In the further course each village had one or even two mills by the stream.

Touristic

Between Dillendorf and Oberkirn the Kyrbach runs through a lonely valley with no road connection. Several disused slate pits are located in this section of the valley.

Flora and fauna

The Kyrbach flows through extensively used valley meadows, with willows and alders on the banks that are hardly used economically today. In the area of the villages of Sohrschied , Schwerbach and Lindenschied , the valley becomes narrower, slopes wooded with oak and hornbeam step directly on the stream. Gray herons and mallards are the most common water birds in the Bachtal. Kingfishers are also seen more often on the banks of the stream.
