About this picture

Ober Kostenz is a municipality in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Kirchberg (Hunsrück) community .

geography

The rural residential community is centrally located in the Kyrbachtal in the Hunsrück . The district has an area of 5.84 km², of which 2.06 km² is forest.

history

As in Nieder Kostenz , there was probably an early Roman settlement in Upper Kostenz . A grave field from the 1st century was uncovered in 1939 and 1949 at what is now Kreisstraße 10 to Hunsrückhöhenstraße . The first documentary mention can be found in 1220 in a property register of the St. Maximin Abbey . From 1286 to 1333 there is evidence of a local noble family in Ober Kostenz who held a native fiefdom . The place belonged to the front county of Sponheim . After the Counts of Sponheim died out, the place passed to the Count Palatine and Margrave of Baden as a condominium . In 1708 the co-owners divided the property and the upper cost went entirely to Baden. With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine in 1794 by French revolutionary troops , the place became French, in 1815 it was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . After the First World War, Upper Kostenz was temporarily occupied by the French again. Since 1946 the place has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Blazon : "Under a shield head in two rows of blue and gold in a golden field, a red diagonal right bar, accompanied at the top by a black Gothic C, at the bottom by a black choker."
Justification for the coat of arms: The head of the shield refers to the former affiliation to the front county of Sponheim, the red bar in gold to the later rule of Baden . The letter C indicates the place name (earlier spelling Costenz) and the knight Conrad von Costenz mentioned in 1310. The black choker (spiral ring) refers to the numerous finds made near the Eichelberg in the burial field of the Hunsrück-Eifel culture .
