history

During the construction of the airstrip for the military airfield in 1951, next to the Hunsrückhöhenstraße route at that time, an approximately three kilometer long prehistoric burial ground comprising around 100 burial mounds was found, which can be attributed to the Hunsrück-Eifel culture . Some finds were secured and are now in the local history museum in Simmern . A systematic excavation was not possible due to time and financial reasons. Other remains of walls, fountains and foundations and numerous ceramic shards found in the area indicate a villa rustica from Roman times, which unfortunately has not been scientifically excavated. The find of a rich cremation grave, probably belonging to this villa, from the second half of the 1st century AD of the Treveri , who settled on the Moselle heights , and whose hill was opened in 1928, is well documented (finds in Simmern).

The name of the place with the ending auf - hausen indicates an occupation of the land in the time of the Franconian conquest . The first documentary mention of a Sponheimer Hof in Lautzenhausen comes from the year 1260. The blue / yellow checkerboard pattern in today's coat of arms comes from the Sponheimers. With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine by French revolutionary troops in 1794 , the place became French , in 1814 it was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Since 1946 the place has been part of the newly founded state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Haus Fürst Dominik, former red light pub

The village was dominated by agriculture until the 1950s. This changed with the construction of Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, which is now used for civilian purposes . It was first planned by the French occupation forces in 1946 , but was built by the American occupation forces in the following years . The airport was called Hahn Air Base by the Americans , supposedly because they couldn't pronounce Lautzenhausen. A more likely explanation is that a large part of the airport is located in the district of Hahn , as some plans of the time show. Since the main gate of the air base was directly at the entrance to Lautzenhausen, an interface between the military and civil sectors was created here. For the town it was a turning point for the next few decades: Buildings that had previously been used for agriculture were converted and new buildings were added. Hotels, restaurants, bars and operations in the red light district were installed in them in order to be able to offer members of the US Air Force suitable opportunities for recreational activities.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Lautzenhausen
Blazon : "Under the blue head of the shield, in it a silver double swing arm, a field pinned with blue and gold with a raised, curved blue tip, in it a silver fountain."
Justification of the coat of arms: The chess and the coat of arms colors blue and gold indicate former affiliation to the front county of Sponheim . The silver double swing arm stands for the location of the former US air base and today's Hahn airfield in part of Lautzenhauser district. The airfield is of considerable economic importance for the community. The depicted, no longer existing village fountain is intended to remind of the old community center and thus also of the village community as an important foundation of the community.

Others

The film Schwarzer Kies was shot in Lautzenhausen in 1960/61 under the direction of Helmut Käutner . Content: In the imaginary town of Sohnen (Lautzenhausen), a truck driver sells gravel, which was intended for the construction of the runway on the nearby military airfield, to smaller companies. When the police start investigations, a fatal accident occurs, which leads to an accident. A central location was in front of and in the restaurant on Hauptstraße 25. The name of the place "Atlantic" was retained in the film.
