Argenthal is a municipality in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Simmern-Rheinböllen community .
geography
Argenthal is located on the northwestern edge of the Soonwald , a part of the Hunsrück up to 657 m high, which is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains .
To Argenthal includes the residential places Birkenhof, Eckelhornerhof, Weidenhof, Forsthaus Ellern, Forsthaus Thiergarten, Haus am Waldsee, Jägerhof and Wacholderhof.
With an area of 28.52 km², of which 19.85 km² is forest (Soonwald), the Argenthal district is the second largest in the Rhein-Hunsrück district after Boppard (source: state statistical office, as of December 31, 2007). Larger localities in the neighborhood are Simmern in the west and Rheinböllen in the east.
The highest point in Argenthal is the Opel at 649.3 m above sea level. NHN . The forest lake is located in the area of the municipality, this bathing water originated from an ore mine closed in 1935.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1091 as "Argantal". Argindal was owned as an imperial fiefdom in the 13th century by Ritter von Schönburg auf Wesel . A Merbodo dictus de Argindal is mentioned by name . Since the 14th century, the sovereign was the Count Palatine of the Rhine . With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine by French revolutionary troops in 1794 , the place became French. In 1815 he was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Since 1946 the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

The local mayor is Hans-Werner Merg (FWGA). In the runoff election on June 16, 2019, he prevailed with a share of 59.49% of the vote, after none of the original three candidates had achieved the necessary majority in the local election on May 26, 2019. He is the successor of the previous mayor Sarah Groß.
Economy and Infrastructure
Argenthal is one of the larger Hunsrück towns in which only a few people are still active in agriculture. The majority of the population are employed as workers, employees, civil servants, artisans, tradespeople and soldiers.
