Peter Engelmann (pedagogue)

Peter Engelmann (born January 24, 1823 in Argenthal ; † May 17, 1874 ) was an American-German pedagogue, author and founder of the German-English Academy (today: University School of Milwaukee ).

biography

Engelmann attended the Royal Prussian grammar school in Kreuznach until autumn 1842 and studied at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and at the Alma Mater Berolinensis in Berlin. From 1846 he taught mathematics and geography at the Kreuznach high school as a teacher training candidate . During the revolution of 1848/49 he identified with the republican movement in Germany. In Kreuznach he published a democratic magazine, was involved in the boards of the local gymnastics association , the "Democratic Association" and in the "People's Committee". Engelmann wrote for a time in 1848/49 for the revolutionary newspapers Kreuznacher Zeitung and Der Demokratie (subtitles Liberty, Equality, Fraternity ) published by Georg Würmle (* 1805 ) and was forced to emigrate to the United States in May of the same year.

Engelmann found an agricultural job in Marshall (Michigan) . In 1851 he moved to Milwaukee via Oshkosh . There he worked for the Milwaukee School Association and founded the German-English Academy , which he directed until his death. In 1873 he founded Milwaukee's first kindergarten at the academy and integrated training in singing, sports and drawing. In 1857 he founded the Wisconsin Natural History Society , the collection of which was transferred to the Milwaukee Public Museum in 1882 . He also founded the People's Literary Society , a popular literary society, was involved in several freethinking societies and wrote numerous articles.
