Hugo Erfurt - inventor of woodchip wallpaper

Heinrich Wilhelm Hugo Erfurt (born February 13, 1834 in Schwelm ; † March 4, 1922 in Dahlhausen near Beyenburg ) was a German entrepreneur and inventor of woodchip wallpaper .

Life

He was the son of the papermaker Heinrich Erfurt (1803-1856) and his wife Auguste Braselmann (1801-1871). Father Heinrich and grandfather Friedrich Erfurt (1768–1837) worked their way up from apprentice papermaker to owner of an efficient paper mill and in 1827 received the concession to build the Friedrich Erfurt & Son paper mill . In 1844 his father had one of the world's first paper machines installed, which enabled production to be increased significantly. After his father's death (1856), his mother Auguste took over the management for the next 13 years, until she handed over the successor to the third generation of the company, their two sons Heinrich and Hugo. During this time, production shifted to the manufacture of base papers for wallpaper production . From 1859, the Cologne-based wallpaper factory Flamersheim & Steinmann was a bulk buyer for almost 20 years .

In 1864 the adventurous Hugo Erfurt, actually a trained pharmacist , produced a paper for shop window design and as a basis for glue-printed wallpaper. This product, called ingrain or wood fiber wallpaper around 1885 , is considered the forerunner of woodchip and was known under this name from 1918. The real boom in paintable wallcovering finally started in the Bauhaus era of the 1920s. The current brand name "Erfurt-Rauhfaser" is derived from the name of Hugo Erfurt.

On December 15, 1861, Erfurt married his relative (cousin?) Catharina Maria Auguste Hager, the daughter of Eduard Hager and Amalie Braselmann, in his hometown Schwelm. Her sons Hugo (1863–1937) and Heinrich Erfurt (1868–1945) took over the paper mill in the fourth generation in 1893 and expanded the business to North America . Interrupted by the First World War , production started again in 1918. For a short time paper was also made for emergency money .

In Wuppertal , Hugo-Erfurt-Strasse was named after Erfurt.
