Woodchip wallpaper (painted white)

Woodchip (before the reform of the German spelling in 1996 and today as a non-protected trade name of the inventor and manufacturer: woodchip ) is a form of wallpaper with an unevenly structured - and therefore "rough (h) en" - surface. It was invented in 1864 by the pharmacist Hugo Erfurt (1834–1922) under the name "Rauhfaser". At first it served as a decoration paper for shop windows and as a base paper for glue-printed wallpapers. In the so-called Bauhaus era of the 1920s, they began to be used as wallpaper in interior design.

Hugo Erfurt was a grandson of the papermaker Friedrich Erfurt , who founded the Erfurt & Sohn company in Wuppertal in 1827 , which is now the world's largest producer of paintable wallpapers and which is still based in Wuppertal.

Measured by sales figures, woodchip is the most common wall covering in Germany.

properties

Today, woodchip consists of three layers of paper into which structure- forming wood fibers are firmly incorporated. Depending on the grain size, fine, medium and coarse structures are created. When renovating , the covering can be painted over several times and does not need to be completely replaced. A coarse-grained wall covering can also be painted over more often because its grain (structure) is visible longer. If you use special primers before wallpapering, woodchip wallpaper can be peeled off dry. However, like other wallpapers, they are traditionally soaked. The reversible paste dissolves and the wallpaper can, more or less well, be removed from the surface. If the woodchip has been coated with water-impermeable latex paint , prior perforation is advisable and necessary.

With the establishment of non-woven wallpapers , there are now woodchip as fleece variant.

history

In the past, walls were painted with lime or glue paint that had to be washed off with every renovation. Then the idea came up of sticking a paper covering between the paint and the wall so that you only had to remove the wallpaper to remove the paint as well. After Erfurt & Sohn had already developed a "woodchip wallpaper" for shop window decoration in 1864, this established itself as a good and universal wall covering in the 1920s. Due to its structure, it covers unevenness in the wall, as can often be found in old buildings due to old, partially peeled paint on the plaster , cracks or repair areas. Woodchip owes its popularity primarily to the low renovation costs, its robustness and its ease of processing. In addition, it is harmless to health when using appropriate paste and wall paints . Recycled paper is used for the most part in its manufacture and PVC , plasticizers and solvents are largely avoided. Since 2007, woodchip types have been offered which, according to the TÜV seal, are also suitable for households with allergies . Since it was introduced in 2009, it has also been possible to create wave and striped patterns with a woodchip structure using the Rauhvlies design .

processing

As with any other wallpaper, woodchip is evenly coated on the back with a suitable paste. Are of any help Pasting Machines with which the paste job takes place particularly smoothly and efficiently. After the pasted strips have been put together, they must soak for a certain time before they are glued to the substrate and stretch over the wall surface as they dry.

With the so-called fleece woodchip , the structure is created from wood chips like the classic original. The wall covering can be wallpapered directly from the roll onto the pasted wall. Cutting, gluing and soaking are no longer necessary. However, this type of wallpaper does not stretch when it dries on the wall, which is why it is not so well suited for uneven walls. As is usual with non-woven materials, they can also be removed dry from the wall in the event of renovation without tools.

Artistic reception

  • The woodchip wallpaper as the epitome of the English petty bourgeoisie is the leitmotif of the 1995 single Disco 2000 by the English pop band Pulp ( Your house was very small / With woodchip on the wall ).
