Trade name
A trade name (also: trade name ) is the name of an article, a manufacturing process, a chemical compound or the like that is protected as a word mark . The use of brand names in chemistry and pharmacy is particularly noticeable , because the correct chemical names are often very complex and therefore not catchy.
Well-known examples include acetylsalicylic acid (ASS), which has become known as Aspirin ( Bayer AG ), polystyrene , which in its foamed state is known as Styrofoam ( BASF brand ), polytetrafluoroethylene ( Teflon ) as a DuPont brand or Tempo as a generic name for paper handkerchiefs. In some cases, one also speaks of “ generic brand names”, whose product name protection is sometimes difficult.
Not protected trade names
In addition to the brand names, trade names for uncommon colloquial names of goods are selected in the food and flower trade according to marketing aspects, for example:
- Tropical fruits for a group of classic import fruits
- Blued duck for the wart duck , trout sturgeon for the monkfish , sea eel for the dogfish . The term saithe for coalfish , which is common today, is based on such marketing.
Trade names are also common in the textile industry, in house building and in the household:
- Fashion colors such as beige , ecru , Sahara , mohair
- for color nuances (see natural colors )
