About this picture
Jakob Kneip Museum and Church

Morshausen is a municipality in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein community .

geography

Morshausen is six kilometers from the Moselle and ten kilometers from Emmelshausen at an altitude of 334 m.

The Haus auf dem Bröhl residential area also belongs to Morshausen .

history

A fragment of a Neolithic (approx. 4400 to 2200 BC) oval rock ax , which is 9.3 cm in length and 6.4 cm in width, certainly testifies to settlement activities of early arable farmers. The ax that was found a few hundred meters west of the village is made of Devonian quartzite, which is found nearby. Similar stone ax finds were discovered by members of the ARRATA archeology association in the neighboring villages of Beulich, Macken and Mermuth. Various readings from the Roman era (roof tiles, ceramics, etc.) near the village are to be seen as evidence of an estate (villa rustica). In the surrounding forests you can find grave gardens that reflect the typical Roman customs of the dead in the Hunsrück.

Morshausen used to belong to the Gallscheid court of the Electorate of Trier .

tourism

Attractions

The swivel fountain was built in the 15th century by a Hungarian countess who married at the Ehrenburg in the style of the Hungarian puszta fountain . The wooden construction has since been renewed at regular intervals by the community and can still be viewed in Brunnenstrasse. The Stutzweck results from the legacy of a Morshausen resident from the year 1782. He bequeathed his fortune to the community with the stipulation that he could acquire a good field, use the rent to bake stutzwecken during Holy Week and buy wine.

The 500-year-old Jakob-Kneip-Eiche at the western end of Jakob-Kneip-Straße was named after the local poet in 1951. It has a trunk circumference of 6 meters.

The statue of the Virgin Mary erected next to the oak was created in the same year by his friend Eugen Keller (painter) for his 70th birthday.

Hiking trails

The premium hiking trail Saar-Hunsrück-Steig and its dream loop Murscher Eselsche run through the village; The parking lot at the end of Jakob-Kneip-Straße is suitable as a starting point and destination. There is a refuge and a children's playground.

Personalities

Morshausen is the birthplace of the local poet Jakob Kneip .
