Tools from the Neolithic Age were discovered in the Woppenrother district . In barrows (1600-1200 v. Chr.) Were found after 1945 bronze jewelry (bracelets and rings) and ceramic vessels.

Woppenroth is a place with a clearing name . The founding of localities with the Rode ending, such as -rath or -roth, mostly fall during the time of the Franconian conquest . This is due to the location of the place in the easier to work dry plateau of the Hunsrück. The humid valleys were later colonized. Woppenroth was first mentioned in a document in 1269. In the document, Wildgraf Emich von Kyrburg (located near Kirn) transferred the village to Wilhelm von Schmidtburg for 100 Trierian pounds . Woppenroth belonged to the high court of Rhaunen . Until the 14th century, the wild counts held the court and thus also the sovereignty. Due to the Dhauner feud of the wild counts with the Trier Archbishop Balduin von Trier , a quarter of the court came to Kurtrier . In the second half of the 14th century the wild counts died out and the Rhine counts inherited them.

With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine by French revolutionary troops in 1794 , Woppenroth became part of France. In 1815, after the French period , it was at the Congress of Vienna the Kingdom of Prussia and from 1822 his Rheinprovinz assigned. After the First and Second World Wars , the place was temporarily occupied by the French. Since 1946 the place has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Desolation

The former living quarters of Kaffeld and Blickersau in the Woppenroth area are deserted .

Kaffeld was destroyed in the Nassau feud in 1399 . It was near today's juniper heather. Farmers say that while working in the fields until the 1960s they came across the foundations of the settlement.

Blickersau, located on the Hahnenbach , whose district is now divided between Woppenrother and Hauser municipal areas, was already in ruins in 1469, but was rebuilt for a few years in the 19th century.

Not much is known about the Hellkirch ruins , 60 m above the Hahnenbachtal. The architecture - 1.5 m thick walls, inner side length 4.5 m, square room - suggests a great age. It was probably a religious building, probably a chapel. The name is probably derived from the Middle High German "helde", which means a hill with a steep incline; In dialect , "Hell" was used as a name for steep mountain slopes until the 20th century.

church

In 1913, the construction of today's church began as a replacement for the predecessor building, which had become too small and which later served as a Raiffeisen warehouse for a long time. This church has been in use since 1920, and the parish fair took place in 1926. Steel bells have replaced the two bronze bells melted down during World War I, which had been in service in the old church since 1889 and one of which is said to have come from the Hellkirch.

183 of the total of 250 Woppenroth are Protestant. The Protestant community Woppenroth joined in 1976 by the church district Trier for Kirchenkreis Simmern-Trarbach . The pastoral connection with Hausen was followed by that with Dickenschied , Rohrbach and Womrath . In 2012 Woppenroth, Rohrbach and Womrath became part of the Dickenschied parish.

The Catholics belong to the parish of St. Martin in Rhaunen .

coat of arms

Woppenroth coat of arms
Blazon : “In a split shield in front in gold a blue-armored and -tongued red lion. In the back a silver wavy bar accompanied above in green by a silver ruin with a window, below in black by a silver buckle. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The front half of the shield refers to the former affiliation of the place to the Wild and Rhine Counts Ingericht (= local court) Hausen , to which Woppenroth belonged. The rear half of the shield, with the brook as a wave beam, refers to the brooks as former borders. The ruin refers to Hellkirch, which is within the district. The silver buckle in black shows the Schmidtburg coat of arms and refers to the former Schmidtburg line, which had rulership rights in Woppenroth.

Culture

Film "Heimat"

Culturally, Woppenroth is best known through the Heimat trilogy: In 1981/1982 the first season of the film series Heimat - Eine deutsche Chronik (1984) was filmed in Woppenroth and other Hunsrück locations . Woppenroth was the central location and became an open-air studio as the fictional village of Schabbach . Many villagers were involved in the shooting as extras. Woppenroth was also the backdrop for the third part of the trilogy, Heimat 3 - Chronik einer Zeitenwende (2004) . Other locations for Schabbach were Gehlweiler , Rohrbach and to Schlierschied belonging Anzenfeldermühle. Edgar Reitz , who was born in the Hunsrück, chose the name of the film location after a family name he found on a tombstone in Bischofsdhron , a district of Morbach.

In Woppenroth there are a total of four choirs, three of them as part of the Protestant church choir.
