history
Surname
The name Kellenbach is probably derived from the Old High German word kela , which means something like "throat" or, figuratively, "narrow valley".
Middle Ages until today
The place Kellenbach was first mentioned in a document around 1200. Theoderich vom Stein built a castle house on this site and has since been considered the progenitor of the Lords of Kellenbach, a side line of the Lords of Stein ( Steinkallenfels ).
Until the beginning of the 18th century, the place was the official seat of a court and administrative district, which also included the neighboring villages of Henau , Königsau and Schwarzerden , and at times also Weitersborn . In the Kellenbacher Weistum of 1560, the lords of Steinkallenfels and their co-heirs are named as court lords of the Kellenbach High Court. In the meantime, however, the land and judiciary had been divided into 4 main parts through the division of inheritance, sales and fiefdoms, so that the Kellenbach High Court was an inheritance with joint high jurisdiction. A quarter at the Hochgericht belonged to the Koppenstein office . Count Simon III had this share. von Sponheim acquired by Johann von Treis in 1403. The other four parts belong to the knights of Stein-Kallenfels, von Schmidtburg and the lords of Kellenbach. From 1707 the sovereign was the Margrave of Baden as heir to the Counts of Sponheim .
Around 1750 the manor was sold to the bailiff of the neighboring Wartenstein Castle in the Hahnenbachtal , Franz Philipp Renauld .
In the 18th century the village belonged to the Baden Oberamt Kirchberg . After the occupation of the Rhineland in the French era and the French territorial and administrative reform, Kellenbach came to Mairie Kirn in the arrondissement of Simmern in 1794 . Around 1800 the village had 40 houses, 4 of which were extended to two storeys.
Under Prussian rule, from 1816, the community of Kellenbach was assigned to the mayor's office in Gemünden (from 1927 office) and thus to the district of Simmern . On June 7, 1969, in the course of the state law of November 12, 1968, it was assigned together with Königsau , Bruschied , Schneppenbach and Schwarzerden to the Bad Kreuznach district and the community of Kirn-Land.
Fire in the caravan factory
On January 9, 1971, a major fire destroyed part of the Wilk-Caravaning GmbH branch on the northern outskirts. The fire was triggered by flying sparks in the locksmith's shop, which ignited nitrocellulose paint. A company employee who lived on the factory premises noticed the fire in good time and alerted the fire brigade. Since it was a Saturday, which could Volunteer Fire Kellenbach very quickly begin to extinguish the before the fire departments Kirn and Gemünden and airfield defense Pferdsfeld arrived. This prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the building and completely destroying the plant. Shortly after the fire, the damage was estimated at over 100,000 marks.
Ice jam on the Kellenbach
On January 22, 1985, an ice rush flooded the main street and caused extensive damage to the buildings of the residents. After a three-week cold spell, the river in the center of the village and downstream towards the Simmertal was thickly frozen, but the onset of the thaw meant that large amounts of ice floes were driven. These piled up above a woog and piled under the bridge over the stream, which was only a few years old at the time. According to eyewitnesses, only a few centimeters were missing before the ice masses had reached the bridge's abutment . Competence problems between different authorities prevented a blasting of the ice, which was requested by the local residents and which had also been carried out on previous occasions. After cattle had already been evacuated and sandbags had been ordered to secure them, the ice cover finally broke open shortly before midnight and the water could drain away again.

coat of arms
Blazon : "In a divided shield above in red a striding, looking, silver leopard, below in silver over a wavy shield base three green tips." | |
Justification of the coat of arms: The leopard is taken from the coat of arms of the Lords of Kellenbach. The three tips are taken from the old court seal from Kellenbach. The wavy base of the shield symbolizes the Kellenbach, after which the place is named.
The municipal council commissioned the graphic artist Karlheinz Brust from Kirnsulzbach to develop a design for a municipal coat of arms. At its meeting on August 27, 1970, the Council approved the draft presented. After approval by the State Archives, the Ministry of the Interior in Mainz granted on January 20, 1971 permission to use one's own coat of arms. |
Culture and sights
Buildings
Located on the main street is the St. Hildegardis Chapel, built in 1912 , a branch church of the Seesbach Catholic parish .
The listed Protestant church, which has Romanesque and Gothic elements, is located higher up. It is considered to be one of the oldest churches in the association. It is clearly mentioned in documents for the first time in 1314, but some structural elements, especially in the tower area, suggest that the building or at least parts of it was built around 200 years earlier. Research by pastor H. Gramm from Kellenbach in the 1920s revealed that the church was originally dedicated to Vitus (Veit) . The organ's prospectus , which Michael Engers, a student of the Stumm family from Schwerbach , designed around 1790, is particularly worth seeing . This prospectus, which was rebuilt in 1908 by F. Faust, appears completely oversized for a church of this size. The richly decorated altar table is also worth seeing .
Two smaller bells date from the 13th century, a third of 9 hundredweight from 1442. A fourth had to be given in during the First World War .
Next to the Protestant church is the cemetery for the communities of Kellenbach and Königsau. In the past, the dead from Henau and Schwarzerden were also buried here; since 1890 and 1892 these villages have had their own cemeteries. The last resident of Koppenstein Castle , Maria Margaretha Rosenstein, known as the "Koppensteiner Gretchen", was buried here in 1821 . The exact location of her grave is not known.

- The fire brigade has their equipment and the fire engine on the ground floor of the local community center. A youth fire brigade is also active.

Regular events
Every year at Pentecost , all local associations organize the village festival on the village square "Unter den Linden" in the center of the village. At the beginning of July, the TuS Königsau-Kellenbach sports festival takes place on the sports field, followed by the Kellebacher Kerb ( fair ) in mid-August and the fire brigade festival of the Kellenbach volunteer fire brigade in September, both in and around the community center. The Rosenmontagszug , in which the fools from Kellenbach and the neighboring town of Königsau go from house to house through both villages and ask for gifts with a common saying (" Hahnappeln "), also has a tradition that goes back decades . Until the 1990s, a cap meeting was also held every year on Shrove Tuesday .
Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Kellenbach is on the B 421 , via which the Hahn airfield and the towns of Kirchberg and Simmern can be reached in the north and the B41 to the south .
Public facilities
From 1963 to August 1974 there was a village school in Kellenbach. Since January 1977 the old school house has been used as a kindergarten, which in 2007 was named "House of Little Friends" on its 30th anniversary. The children we care for come from our own community and from the neighboring communities of Königsau, Weitersborn and Schwarzerden.
Established businesses
From 1965 to 1982 the caravan manufacturer "Wilk" (at times "CI Wilk", later a brand of Knaus Tabbert GmbH ) with headquarters in Bad Kreuznach had a branch on the northern outskirts, which at times employed over 100 people. After the closure, the companies located there changed several times. The site is currently used by the Hermes company .
Agriculture
Although the view of the town is rural, agriculture no longer plays a role as a livelihood in Kellenbach. While there were still 32 farms in 1971, this number had fallen to three by 2007, none of which were full-time farms.
