history
Until the end of the 18th century, Schmittweiler belonged to the Oberamt Meisenheim in Zweibrücken .
After 1792 the region was occupied by French troops in the First Revolutionary War and annexed after the Peace of Campo Formio (1797) . From 1798 to 1814 Schmittweiler belonged to the French department of Donnersberg and was assigned to the canton of Lauterecken . Due to the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna (1815) and an exchange contract with Austria , the region became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 . From 1818 the community of Schmittweiler was part of the Kusel Land Commissioner in the Bavarian Rhine District, later assigned to the Kusel District Office, from which the Kusel District emerged in 1938 . To distinguish it from Schmittweiler (Schönenberg-Kübelberg) the place had the official addition "District Court Lauterecken".
After the Second World War , Schmittweiler became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone and belonged to the administrative district of Palatinate until 1968 . In the Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform in 1969 Schmittweiler was the Kusel district in the district of Bad Kreuznach reclassified. From an ecclesiastical point of view, Schmittweiler still belongs to the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate and the Diocese of Speyer .
