Location of Schmittweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate

Schmittweiler is part of the municipality of Schönenberg-Kübelberg in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Kusel . Until 1969 Schmittweiler was an independent municipality.

location

The place is in the West Palatinate region and in the Saar-Nahe-Bergland countryside . In the west it borders on Dunzweiler , in the north on Dittweiler and Brücken (Pfalz) , in the south on Waldmohr and in the east on the district of Kübelberg .

history

Schmittweiler is probably the oldest part of the municipality in Schönenberg-Kübelberg. The starting point for settlement in the area were the royal courts of Kusel and Waldmohr . In the 7th and 8th centuries, the hamlets of Dunzweiler, Dittweiler, Staßweiler near Altenkirchen and Schmittweiler were established.

In a document, however, Schmittweiler was only mentioned in 1438 as "Schmidwilr", in 1456 as "Smydewilr" and in 1475 as "Smidwiler". The current name was first used around 1600.

Schmittweiler belonged to the Electoral Palatinate until 1779 and was assigned to the office or court of Kübelberg , which was set up in the 15th century and was subordinate to the Lautern Oberamt . In 1779, the Kübelberg court, including the town of Schmittweiler, was exchanged for the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken and now belonged to the Oberamt Homburg.

After the Left Bank of the Rhine was taken by French revolutionary troops (1794), Schmittweiler was assigned to the canton of Waldmohr in the Saar department from 1798 to 1814 . The community of Schmittweiler was under the administration of Mairie Schönenberg. In 1802 the place had 135 inhabitants together with the mill below the village.

Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna , the Palatinate came to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 . The municipality of Schmittweiler in the canton of Waldmohr , which was part of the Landkommissariat Homburg (renamed District Office Homburg in 1862 ) in the Rhine district, remained under the Bavarian administration . In 1837 Schmittweiler already had 295 inhabitants, of which 194 were Catholics who were parish in Kübelberg and 81 Protestants who belonged to the Waldmohr parish .

In the Bavarian local register from 1928, the rural community of Schmittweiler, now part of the Bavarian administrative district Palatinate and the district office of Kusel , is described as follows: Village with 550 inhabitants (442 Catholics and 108 Protestants), 89 residential buildings and an area of 335 hectares; there was a mixed denominational school.

In connection with the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , the previously independent municipality of Schmittweiler with 603 inhabitants was dissolved on June 7, 1969, and from this, together with the municipalities of Kübelberg, Sand and Schönenberg, which were also dissolved, today's local community Schönenberg-Kübelberg was re-established.

The current mayor of the local community Schönenberg-Kübelberg, Josef Weis ( CDU ), comes from the district of Schmittweiler.

Population development

The number of residents of Schmittweiler has increased from 1592 (30 residents) to today (over 600 residents). In 1858 there was a significant decrease in population at that time. The reason for this was the high emigration rates to the USA at the time.

Miracle girl

In 1584 a strange incident was reported by Schmittweiler. For example, there was a report of a miracle girl who lived in Schmittweiler, who had been in bed for seven years and neither ate nor drank. The matter has been reviewed by the highest authorities and no fraud was found in this statement. This event was reported in numerous leaflets. At that time Schmittweiler had 30 inhabitants, for comparison: Sand 65, Schönenberg 70 and Kübelberg 75 inhabitants.
