history

Shortly before the year 1000, the Archbishop of Mainz Willigis had a church built here on a flat sloping site; From there, the Soonwald should be opened up for the church and the people should be proselytized. In 1045, Emperor Heinrich III. various goods and in 1091 Emperor Heinrich IV gave a court estate in Semmundesbach to the Bishop of Speyer. This place has belonged to the Böckelheim Crown Estate for centuries. These donations were confirmed in 1101 and 1140; the bishops passed their shares on to the Counts of Sponheim as fiefdoms . In 1434 Seesbach and other villages were in the hands of the Knights of Boos von Waldeck as pawns, and in 1483 in the hands of the Knights of Rüdesheim, whose shares were also transferred to Boose through marriage in 1490.

After the Sponheimers died out in 1437, their possessions passed to several common lords: Kurpfalz , Baden and Veldenz (from 1444 Zweibrücken). The Sponheim branch of the von Koppenstein family owned various shares in Seesbach when it was created in 1301. This small rule lasted until the 18th century.

In 1707 the Baden shares were transferred to the Electoral Palatinate; the Zweibrücker shares had meanwhile also been united with the Palatinate Electorate through several inheritance cases in the Wittelsbach house . As far as parts of Seesbach belonged to the Martinstein rule, the margraviate of Baden took possession of them in 1716 and 1779 . The 18th century brought hard times for the inhabitants; Through wars and bad harvests there were famine years, which among other things led to the emigration of around two thirds of the population from 1782–1785. The princely rule of Baden ended in 1798 when the French conquerors assigned Seesbach to the new Mairie Monzingen; From now on the place shared the fate of the administrative unit: 1815 to Prussia, 1946 to Rhineland-Palatinate, 1970 to the Verbandsgemeinde Sobernheim.

Blazon : "Under a gold-blue shield head with a twisted silver tip, inside a blue chapel, split, in front a silver, six-spoke wheel in red, behind in black a gold, red-armored and crowned lion."
The reason for the coat of arms: The chapel represents the old Semendiskapelle. The other symbols refer to former sovereigns, the colors gold and blue to the county of Sponheim , the Mainz wheel to Kurmainz and the Palatinate lion to Pfalz-Zweibrücken and the Kurpfalz .

dialect

Seesbach is located directly southeast of the "das / dat" language border, which also cuts through Rhineland-Palatinate as the Sankt Goarer line or the Hunsrück barrier. It is one of the central isoglosses in the German-speaking world. This means that the Seesbach dialect can just be assigned to Rhine-Franconian (das), while neighboring towns to the northwest and west can already be located in Mosel-Franconian (dat).

Personalities

  • Mathias Bollinger (1858–1961), the legendary forester and master guard from the Soonwald.
