Kellenbach is the name of the lower reaches of the Simmerbach from Gemünden . It is a river in the Hunsrück , Rhineland-Palatinate .
Surname
The name Kellenbach is probably derived from the Old High German word kela , which means something like "throat" or, figuratively, "narrow valley".
geography
The Kellenbach is approx. 17 km long and flows into the Nahe near Simmertal . The deep valley of the Kellenbach divides the Soonwald and the Lützelsoon . The Soonwald breakthrough between Gehlweiler and Königsau is one of the most attractive whitewater kayak routes in Rhineland-Palatinate . Numerous weir systems dam the stream over short stretches. The federal highway 421 runs parallel to the river.
Flora and fauna
The Kellenbach flows through economically rarely used valley meadows, with willows and alders on the banks . In the area of the Soonwald breakthrough, the valley becomes narrower, slopes wooded with oak and hornbeam border directly on the stream. Gray herons and mallards are the most common water birds in the Bachtal, and the dipper and kingfisher also have their habitat on the fast-flowing water.
