history

Tabbert Ideal: first production vehicle from the Tabbert brand

Tabbert

The body Alfred Tabbert was in 1934 by the master coachbuilder Alfred Tabbert (1,908 to 1,973) in Schweinfurt founded. The factory was destroyed by bombs in the Second World War in 1943 , but after the war in 1946 it again produced platform wagons for agriculture with around 80 employees. In 1948 the plant was destroyed by a major fire. A new hall was then built as the Franconian vehicle and furniture factory, in which single-axle trailers and furniture were manufactured.

In 1953 the first Tabbert brand caravan was produced and from 1955 the ideal caravan was produced in series. Five years later the first awning goes into production. 1959 TABBERT Wohnwagen GmbH is founded in Mottgers , Hesse . In 1971 Tabbert is now the German market leader with 14 models such as the “Kurfüst”, “Excellence”, “Comtesse” and “Gouverneur”.

In 1984 the company was renamed Tabbert Caravan GmbH with its headquarters in Sinntal , which in 1987 was merged with FFB and CI Wilk Bad Kreuznach GmbH to form the new TIAG - TABBERT Industrie AG as the holding company of the group of companies. In 1990 the company was listed on the stock exchange and in 1997 it was taken over by KNAUS AG .

Wilk

In 1952, two years after his return from Soviet captivity, Helmut Wilk founded CI Wilk in Bad Kreuznach . With his invention - a car bed made of upholstered wedges - he made his first appearance in the caravanning industry . In 1959 he built his first caravan .

The company Caravans International Wilk Bad Kreuznach filed for bankruptcy in 1986 . After the fatal accident of the company's founder, Helmut Wilk, in 1979, the managing directors could no longer continue the success of the ailing company. The Tabbert Caravan GmbH then became the sole shareholder and led to the adoption of workforce, buildings and land, the previous business further. In the meantime, production has stopped.

Knaus

The architect Helmut Knaus, who studied engineering and master builder , founded the Knaus KG caravan company in Marktbreit in 1960 . The history of the Knaus brand began in 1961 with a caravan named Schwalbennest , which from the beginning had the flying pair of swallows as its trademark, which was designed by the company founder himself.

One of the best-selling Knaus models to date, the Südwind , was produced in the production facilities in Marktbreit and later in Ochsenfurt near Würzburg .

Knaus Südwind on a test track in the 1970s

Today's Knaus parent plant in Jandelsbrunn near Passau was established in 1970. In the 1970s, sales were expanded across Europe - sales subsidiaries, independent dealers and contract importers worked together with Knaus. A comprehensive trade, sales and service network with almost 600 partner companies was created.

The Knaus GmbH Jandelsbrunn went in 1981 from the Knaus KG forth. All production and sales activities were concentrated on the Jandelsbrunn location. During the 1980s, Knaus achieved a leading position among European manufacturers of leisure vehicles with the further development of its Südwind and Azur products and the introduction of new products.

On January 1, 2009, Knaus Tabbert was taken over by the Dutch investment company HTP Investments BV from the province of Zeeland . Knaus Tabbert wanted to make this the leading caravan manufacturer in Europe and continue to operate all three plants. The rights to the “Eifelland” brand were not taken over.

In April 2011 the investor HTP announced the participation in Morelo Reisemobile GmbH. Together with Knaus Tabbert GmbH, Morelo operates in the motorhome sector. The independence of both companies was retained. The companies and brands will continue to be run independently.
