history
Very little is known about the history of the Hellkirch. The architecture - 1.5 m thick walls, inner side length 4.5 m, square room - suggests a great age. It was probably a religious room, probably a chapel. The name is probably derived from the Middle High German helde , which means a hill with a steep slope; In dialect, "Hell" was used as a name for steep mountain slopes until the 20th century. Other assumptions connect the ruin with the Schmidtburg, which is about 4 km downstream . The Kaffeld desert lies above, the Blickersau desert below the Hellkirch in the Hahnenbachtal.
