Location of the local community Damscheid in the Rhein-Hunsrück district | ||
Damscheid is a municipality in the Hunsrück in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein community .
geography
The village lies on a narrow ridge (330 m high above sea level), which is bordered in the north by the Niederbach and in the south by the Engehöller valley. A wide forest belt in the west forms the connection between the Damscheider Land and the Hunsrück plateau.
history
The village was first mentioned in a document in 1256. The oldest and at the same time most striking building is the massive, angular church tower with its pointed helmet. It proves that Damscheid played a role in the power-political structure of the Hunsrück long before it was first mentioned in a document. It used to be a defense tower and, according to experts, was built between 1130 and 1150. Loopholes, some of which can still be seen today, prove that the tower was used for defense in the Middle Ages. Damscheid was under the rule of Kurtrier . After the occupation of the Left Bank of the Rhine by French revolutionary troops (1794), the place became French and from 1798 to 1814 belonged to the canton of Bacharach in the Rhine-Mosel department . In 1815 the region was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Since 1946 the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate . In 2006 Damscheid celebrated its 750th birthday.

Economy and Infrastructure
Business
Damscheid was shaped by viticulture. There are still a few winemakers in Damscheid, but fewer and fewer. Some craft businesses, such as roofers or plumbing companies, are at home in Damscheid.
tourism
Damscheid has interesting hiking opportunities due to its location between the Rhine Valley and the wooded heights of the Hunsrück. Well-marked hiking trails lead from the cultural landscape of the Middle Rhine Valley with its vineyards to the meadows and forests on the western edge of Damscheid.
