The station Hermeskeil is a railway station in the city of Hermeskeil in the district of Trier-Saarburg , Rhineland-Palatinate . It was an important junction station until the 1980s , but today it is the start / end point of the Ruwer-Hochwald cycle path in the direction of Trier and the Primstal cycle path in the direction of Nonnweiler . After the shutdown, it was still used sporadically in museum traffic on the routes to Morbach / Bingen and to Türkismühle ; however, since August 31, 2012 there are no more museum tours. The Rhineland-Palatinate / Saarland border runs a few kilometers behind the train station .

history

Hermeskeil station was opened on August 15, 1889 with the commissioning of the Trier – Hermeskeil line through the Ruwertal . From the beginning there were plans to extend the line in the station south to Türkismühle and to connect it to the north to the line from Simmern . The route to Türkismühle was continuously passable from 1897; the route from Simmern reached Hermeskeil in 1903. From then on there were good connections to Saarland and Morbach , as well as to Mainz / Bingen / Koblenz .

In 1933 the station was given a central platform and an underpass . In 1935 the operating facilities were brought up to date. The central platform was destroyed in World War II and not rebuilt. The underpass was filled in during the construction of the Ruwer-Hochwald-Radweg in 2008.

After the severe destruction in World War II, the facilities could be temporarily rebuilt by 1950. To this day there is only a temporary bridge just before the train station . During this time, a regional structural change slowly began to emerge. The train traffic to Türkismühle was modest due to the separated Saarland. In addition, passport controls took place in Hermeskeil and the trip to Saarland had to be paid for in francs . Soon passenger traffic to the south came to a complete standstill. The same thing happened over time with the route to Simmern, on which train journeys were also increasingly shortened.

From 1951, the first VT 95s - and in some cases also VT 98s - were used on the routes, which largely determined the image in the station until it was closed. Up to 2012, rail buses of the 798 series (formerly VT 98) were also used on the museum trips.

Between 1955 and 1982, the facilities in and around the station were gradually closed. The last scheduled passenger train stopped at the station on May 30, 1981. From 1991, the station was operated by the Hochwaldbahn e. V. , which now organized museum trips on the routes. After the Trier – Hermeskeil section was closed, these only took place between Hermeskeil and Türkismühle. The operating license for this route expired in 2012. Since the line from Türkismühle was closed in August 2012, the station has been idle after 123 years.

In January 2014, the station, along with the other systems on the line, was put out to tender by the Hunsrückbahn eV (infrastructure company within the Hochwaldbahn Group) for takeover by third parties. For the time being, there will be no museum trips there either. According to the Hochwaldbahngesellschaft, reactivation is unlikely.

Building and station area

The station building is almost identical to that of the recently built Simmern train station . Here, too, a large goods shed adjoins the main building . In its current form it dates from 1905. Stylistically, however, it also has many structural elements from the 1950s, as it was rebuilt during this time after the war damage.

The infrastructure company Hochwaldbahngruppe has its headquarters in a side wing of the building . This provides transport services for freight trains in the region and museum traffic on the Hunsrück routes.

Currently there are only two main tracks with one platform in the station . In the past it was even 3 or 4 at times.

Bus station

The station square is now used as a bus station. The following lines stop there:

Depot

In 1888 a machine station was set up in Hermeskeil, which was later expanded into a railway depot . In 1956, the DB converted the depot to a branch of the Simmern depot , which was closed in 1959. The area was last used by the Hochwaldbahngruppe for their own purposes. Parts of the track system still exist today.

Steam locomotives in the museum

Today there is a steam locomotive museum on the station premises. It shows around 50 steam, diesel and electric locomotives that are up to 90 years old. The museum is located on the site of the former railway depot and, in addition to the signal box , a functioning turntable and track system, also includes a roundhouse in which the restored pieces from the collection are housed. These include four freight steam locomotives from the 1940s, an express locomotive from 1937, a small diesel locomotive (Köf) and a trolley . The museum is run privately and on a voluntary basis.
