The BBS Technik Harald-Fissler-Schule Idar-Oberstein was one of two vocational schools in the city of Idar-Oberstein and part of the Vollmersbachtal school center . In addition, as a sub-department of the Trier University of Applied Sciences , it houses the only educational institution in Europe specializing in gemstone and jewelry design .

history

The school was founded on November 15, 1843 as "Gewerbeschule Oberstein" by the Nuremberg engraver Conrad Wießner , at that time on the impulse of the Principality of Birkenfeld , to which the city of Oberstein belonged. It soon developed into a training location for metal and gold workers as well as mechanics and craftsmen.

After the Second World War, the school was re-established as the district's vocational, technical and technical school and in 1949 it was split up into the Birkenfeld district vocational school and the commercial vocational school. The former gave rise to the vocational school for trade, housekeeping and social care . Today, BBS Technik is the largest educational institution in the Birkenfeld district, with over 1300 students regularly since 1999. In 1998, the technical high school, specializing in technology with a focus on environmental technology, was added, the technology area of which is a compulsory part of the written Abitur.

On August 1, 2017, the BBS Technik Harald-Fissler-Schule and the Idar-Oberstein Business School merged to form the BBS Idar-Oberstein Harald-Fissler-Schule.

Namesake
