Stromberg was first mentioned in 1177 as the state castle of the bishops of Münster ( Westphalia ). It was the prince-bishop's administrative district until 1803, and an independent titular town until 1975.
The furniture industry, agriculture and fruit growing (plums) are dominant.
Latvian
Lette is with its 2236 inhabitants in the north of the Oelder urban area. Lette was first mentioned in a document in 1133. Before Lette came to Oelde as part of the local reorganization in 1971, after the majority of the Letter population voted in favor of Oelde, it belonged to the office of Herzebrock, together with Clarholz, which has long historically been closely associated .
Coming from Oelde, the largest employer in this district, the household appliance manufacturer Miele , formerly Cordes , is at the entrance to the village .
The St. Vitus Church in the center of the village is part of the Oelde pastoral care unit and is managed by the Oelder parish Sankt Johannes.
Sünninghausen
1265 inhabitants live in the district of Sünninghausen . Settlements in today's Sünninghausen have been documented since the 5th century BC. In the year 890 Sünninghausen is mentioned in the Werden land register .
To reach Sünninghausen, you leave Oelde in a southerly direction. In the town center, the Tigges company stands out as an employer with its cast products.
Furthermore, the only carnival parade in Oelde takes place here every year on Carnival Sunday.
history
The city of Oelde was first mentioned in a document around 890 as "Ulithi im Dreingau " in the land register of the Werden monastery.
In 1457 a fire destroyed the city. In 1498, after the reconstruction, Oelde had 750 citizens. In 1605 another fire raged and destroyed a total of 18 houses, barns and the town hall.
In 1800 a large fire broke out, which killed two thirds of all buildings. In 1804 Oelde received city rights. In 1847 Oelde was connected to the railway network with the construction of the Minden-Cologne railway line. This led to the boom in industrialization in the city of Oelde. Oelde became internationally known in 1880 with the story of the Oelder Wind .
The Jewish community of Oelde existed between the middle of the 17th century and 1938. The mayor, who was in office during the National Socialist era from 1938, wrote to the Gestapo asking that Oelde be quickly made “Jew clean” and that the last Jews be deported .
In 1939, Oelde received its own exit when the motorway was being built . In the 1950s and 1960s, high-profile visitors came to Oelde several times when diplomats accepted the invitation from Federal Presidents Heuss and Lübke to hunt small game in the Geisterholz state forest. These events became popularly known as "diplomatic hunts".
In 2001 the city of Oelde organized the successful state horticultural show for North Rhine-Westphalia with more than 2.2 million visitors. The main topic was the magic of flowers and dreams of children . The former area of the city park was integrated into the garden show area and the surrounding area was renatured with additional sections. It has been commercially cultivated since the end of the state horticultural show and bears the name "Four Seasons Park".

City arms
In blue a silver (white) crescent moon open at the top, above a six-pointed silver (white) star.
The moon and star are a self-explanatory coat of arms in which the words of the church patron John the Baptist are symbolically reproduced: "He (Christ) must grow, I (John) must decrease" ( Jn 3:30). Against the background of this saying, the star stands for Jesus Christ, the waning crescent for John the Baptist, who preceded Jesus and pointed to him.
The coat of arms was awarded to the then Amt Oelde on March 16, 1910 and is now used by the city of Oelde as a legal successor.
Town twinning
An unofficial town partnership with the district town of Niesky in the east of Saxony was established as part of the communal administration aid East .

Buildings in Oelde
- The Haus Geist moated castle was built in the Lippe Renaissance style between 1560 and 1568 by the builder Laurenz von Brachum .
- The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist is one of the oldest parish churches in the diocese . The eastern parts of the current building still come from a three-aisled hall church from the 14th century, which burned down in 1457 and was changed several times in later times. In 1864 it was extended to the west by the diocesan master builder Emil von Manger from Münster and a tower was added. Inside, especially the 1,491 designated draws tabernacle 's attention that from the workshop of Berndt Bunickmann should originate. Among the other pieces of equipment, the late Gothic baptismal font with tracery decoration is to be emphasized.
- The Protestant town church was built in 1880 as a neo-Gothic hall church with a four-storey west tower. Most of the furnishings from the time it was built with the altar, pulpit and organ have been preserved.
- Former district court (city library). The core of the two-storey plastered building with a half -hipped roof dates from 1611. However, today's appearance goes back to a renovation in 1831.
- Only a few older residential buildings have survived in the inner city ; many were heavily modified, especially for use as a commercial building on Langen Strasse. Geistraße 6 offers a very good impression of the earlier construction . The small one-storey hall house in truss structure was built around 1700. The front door is equipped with a classical skylight. On the front there is a later added 18th century vault .
- The Museum of Westphalian Literature Haus Nottbeck is an active literary museum and is part of the "Kulturgut Haus Nottbeck". This is located in the listed former manor house Nottbeck and is on the edge of the Oelder district Stromberg.
