Since it was founded, the company, now in its fourth generation, has been owned by the Miele (51.1%) and Zinkann (48.9%) families. The company is a limited partnership . The partners with unlimited liability ( general partners ) are Miele Verwaltungs-GmbH and Zinkann Verwaltungs-GmbH.
Company history
The company was founded on July 1, 1899 in Herzebrock, Westphalia, by Carl Miele (1869–1938) and Reinhard Zinkann (1864–1939). The company began with eleven employees in a former grain and sawmill. Milk centrifuges were first made, followed by butter machines in 1900. In the same year, Miele developed the first Miele washing machine on the basis of the butter machine .
In 1907 the company with now 60 workers was relocated from Herzebrock to Gütersloh- Nordhorn to a former pump factory. Automobiles were manufactured from 1912. In 1914 Miele was the "largest special factory in Germany for milk centrifuges, butter machines, washing, wringing and ironing machines". In 1916, Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann decided to build a branch in Bielefeld . Milk centrifuge parts and electric motors were initially manufactured there.
Miele started manufacturing vacuum cleaners in 1927 . In 1929, the first electric dishwasher in Europe was manufactured. Motorcycles were built from 1930. In 1932 Miele was the largest centrifuge factory in Europe. During the Second World War, Miele manufactured control units for torpedoes for the German Navy.
In 1953, the company launched Miele mopeds on the German market and quickly became one of the largest motorcycle manufacturers in Germany. In 1960, the production of bicycles and motorcycles was discontinued in favor of the rapidly growing production of dishwashers and washing machines . A plant in Lehrte near Hanover was acquired in 1965 for the production of commercial laundry machines and milking systems . In 1969 they started selling kitchen furniture. For the manufacture of fitted kitchens, the construction of a kitchen factory began in 1973 in the Westphalian town of Warendorf , which began operations in 1975. In 1982 the Miele Group achieved sales of 1,650 million DM.
In 1986, the Cordes company in Oelde-Lette , which specializes in laundry care equipment , achieved sales of around DM 65 million and employed around 400 people. The factory was expanded into an oven factory ; the company name Cordes was given up. In the same year the Miele Museum was opened.
In 1990 Miele took over the company Imperial in Bünde, which specializes in built-in appliances and large cooking systems . At the time of the takeover, Imperial employed around 650 people and achieved sales of around DM 140 million. In addition to the main factory in Bünde, Imperial also had a branch in Arnsberg , which was also incorporated into the Miele Group. The Imperial brand was established as a second brand. In 1999, the year of the company's centenary, Miele was the best-selling brand in the German and European electronics retailers.
In 2004 the managing partner Rudolf Miele (* 1929) died. His partner Peter Zinkann (* 1928) withdrew from day-to-day business at this time. With her sons Markus Miele (* 1968) and Reinhard Zinkann jun. (* 1959) the fourth generation of the founding families took over management duties.
In 2005, Miele gave up the production of kitchen furniture and sold the kitchen factory in Warendorf to the Swiss construction equipment and kitchen manufacturer Arbonia-Forster . The kitchen division had only achieved two percent of the Miele Group's total sales. The plastic parts plant in Warendorf remained in the company's possession. The Imperial brand was discontinued at the turn of the year 2005/2006. In 2007 Miele was awarded the “Best Corporate Brand ” award according to the current GfK brand ranking.
In 2017, Miele presented the Dialog oven at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung). This new category of oven combines classic types of heating with electromagnetic waves. During cooking, the amount of energy released is readjusted and you cook in the entire volume instead of from the outside in. In the same year, the majority of the Italian medical technology manufacturer Steelco is taken over.

The kitchen division of Miele & Cie. KG was founded in 1973. A plant was built in Warendorf in North Rhine-Westphalia for production . The kitchens were sold under the name Miele - Die Küche . At the beginning of 2005, the group announced that it would concentrate on its core business in the future. As a result, on September 1, 2005, the Miele kitchen division became the property of the Swiss Arbonia Forster Group (AFG) as Warendorfer Küchen GmbH . At the same time, Miele acquired the trademark rights in order to be able to use the brand name Miele - Die Küche for another five years. The new kitchen brand Warendorf was presented in 2009, but was only officially launched after the trademark rights had expired in September 2010.
