The Cologne Accumulatoren-Werke were a manufacturer of batteries and electric vehicles in Cologne-Kalk . The company was founded as Accumulatorenwerke Gottfried Hagen as early as 1827 . The manufacture of batteries began there in 1884 .

Between 1904 and 1908, electrically powered cars and trucks were built there under the names KAW (passenger cars) and Urbanus (commercial vehicles).

In 1908 the production of electric vehicles was stopped because they had no chance on the market compared to gasoline-powered automobiles.

Commercial vehicles and electromobile construction

Around 1900 the Hagen company built 1.5–2.5 t electric trucks . They were powered by two 4 hp wheel hub motors that were powered by an 80 volt battery. A patent from the French company Krieger was used for the axle mechanism. The chassis and the like were obtained from Scheele .

In 1908 another 5 ton electric truck was built, which was equipped with four wheel hub motors with a total of 7 HP. The batteries were partially installed under the bonnet and under the seat. Another heavy electric truck was built with four wheel hub motors up to 11 hp.

Light, electrically powered buses and municipal vehicles were also built.

The KAW were luxury and business cars with two electric motors each , which, depending on the circuit, allowed four different speeds of up to 30 km / h. The range was 100 km.

The Urbanus was available as a fire engine or ambulance or as a truck . Around 1500 pieces were produced by 1908.
