Canyon Bicycles headquarters in Koblenz

The Canyon Bicycles GmbH (short: Canyon) is a German bicycle manufacturer of racing bikes , mountain bikes , e-bikes , Gravel bikes and triathlon bikes , headquartered in Koblenz .

Company history

In 1985 the company was founded as "Radsport Arnold GmbH" by Roman Arnold, initially as a specialist retailer for cycling . In 1996 the first own bikes appeared under the Canyon brand. It is not uncommon for specialist cycling dealers to have their own bikes in their range. At Arnold, however, direct sales via the Internet were also chosen.

In 2001 the company made the transition from a specialist dealer to a pure bicycle manufacturer and renamed itself Canyon Bicycles GmbH . With Lutz Scheffer (formerly Bergwerk and Votec) Canyon was able to engage a recognized frame designer. Over the years, the people of Koblenz hired other big names in the scene, including Hans-Christian Smolik . As before, however, the bicycles are only available through direct sales.

In 2006 Canyon presented its new corporate design , which in 2007 received several awards (European Design Award for corporate design, red dot design awards for corporate design and web design, iF Industry Forum Design for corporate design).

In June 2016, US private equity company TSG Consumer Partners acquired a minority stake in Canyon Bicycles .

Cycling commitment

Radsport Arnold has been involved in top-class sport since it was founded. In 1985, the triathlete Jürgen Zäck became the first athlete to be signed. With the Canyon Tri-Team u. a. the Olympic (2008) and multiple Ironman 70.3 winner, as well as three-time Ironman Hawaii winner (2015, 2016, 2019) Jan Frodeno , the British Ironman winner and four-time world champion Leanda Cave , the Ironman winners Nils Frommhold and Markus Fachbach and the triathletes Katja Rabe , Boris Stein , Johannes Moldan , Bas Diederen , Konstantin Seufert and Jens Kaiser .

In racing cycling, the company relies on cooperation with various teams. In 2007, the Unibet.com team was the first team to compete in the UCI ProTour . The Swiss ProTeam Katjuscha and the Spanish ProTeam Movistar Team are currently riding Canyon racing bikes. The team Silence-Lotto , which was sponsored from 2009 to 2011, achieved the greatest success on Canyon racing bikes to date by winning the Cadel Evans World Championship on September 27, 2009. In the same year Philippe Gilbert won one of the cycling monuments with the Tour of Lombardy . He defended this title in 2010. In 2011 Philippe Gilbert won four races in a row and won the three Ardennes classics with the Amstel Gold Race , Fleche Wallone and Liège – Bastogne – Liège . Katjuscha professional Joaquim Rodríguez won the individual classification of the UCI WorldTour on a canyon in both 2012 and 2013 . Since the 2016 season, Canyon has been running the Canyon SRAM Racing Team together with SRAM, which competes in the UCI WorldTour. Alejandro Valverde became road world champion on a Canyon road bike in September 2018.

In addition to triathletes and racing cyclists, the sponsorship also includes mountain bikers. The first commitments in 2006 were the drivers Bobby Root and Stefan Herrmann as well as Lado and Manuel Fumic . The company was thus able to cover various facets of mountain biking. Since then, other drivers such as Robert Jauch alias Rob-J and Tibor Simai have been added to the team. Canyon has been supporting the Topeak Ergon Racing Team since 2011, which includes Austrian marathon world champion Alban Lakata , three-time XC world champion Irina Kalentieva and three-time German XC champion Wolfram Kurschat . The biggest triumph on Canyon mountain bikes to date is Manuel Fumic's victory in the German Cross Country Championship in 2008.

Canyon runs a youth program called Canyon Young Heroes. Riders between the ages of 15 and 16 can apply to the manufacturer for the program and, if they join the team, receive a carbon racing bike and technical support for at least one year. Until his second doping confession in 2013, the mentor of the Canyon Young Heroes was former sprinter Erik Zabel .

Others

In Switzerland, the bicycles were initially marketed under the Coast brand , as the Canyon brand name is already protected by another company. Since Canyon has meanwhile also banned the commercial import of bicycles into Switzerland under the name Coast, they will be sold there under the name Pure Cycling from 2010 . Operation of Pure Cycling was discontinued in the meantime. However, potential buyers were free to buy Canyon bikes from the company headquarters in Koblenz and import them to Switzerland for their own use.

The product portfolio has also been available in Switzerland since August 15, 2019. The previous brand Canyon.swiss, owned by Lizard Sport AG from Pieterlen in the canton of Bern, has been renamed "Cylan" so that the way to Switzerland is free for the globally operating Canyon Bicycles GmbH.

From November 2015, Canyon had to struggle with delivery and service problems after the introduction of a company-wide, standardized IT infrastructure and the opening of a new production site. Canyon founder and CEO Roman Arnold turned himself to the customers with open letters apologizing.
