List of bicycle manufacturers
The vertical range of manufacture is different for bicycle manufacturers . Traditional manufacturing countries for bicycles and bicycle components in the early years of bicycle construction were Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain. In the meantime, however, this has shifted and the majority of production takes place in Asia.
development
Bicycles made from tubes by the Italian manufacturer Columbus or the English manufacturer Reynolds were traditionally considered high quality bicycles. Since the 1970s, new focuses of bicycle manufacturing have developed in Southeast Asian and since the 1990s also in Eastern European countries. Western European and North American brand manufacturers have their models partially or completely manufactured in East Asian and Eastern European countries. In addition, there are now mainly Taiwanese and, increasingly, Eastern European brand manufacturers. Frames made from the above-mentioned steel tubes are now mostly expensive, custom-made products by hand.
Large, internationally present bicycle manufacturers
The world's largest manufacturers today include Trek from the USA and Giant from Taiwan . Both claim the title of the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world, but this cannot be definitely determined. Other possible largest manufacturers are Pon , Atlas , Dorel and Avon .
Other bicycle manufacturers today often belong to larger corporate groups, i. In other words, they have several product names - so-called brands . Examples are the Accell Group from Heerenveen in the Netherlands , the Cycleurope Group based in Stockholm and Dorel Industries in Canada . The largest European manufacturer is Pon Holdings from Almere , the Netherlands , which owns the German Derby Cycle works and in which bicycle production is only a niche division. Indian manufacturers such as Atlas and Avon are market leaders in Africa.
Notable sales figures are known in China, India and Vietnam, these come from a large number of medium-sized companies that only produce for the national market. There are many bicycle manufacturers based in Europe and North America, whose sales are also largely limited to the respective national market. Such brands, however, are often much better known than the major international manufacturers.
Many former bicycle brands have been revived since 2000 and are intended to attract buyers with the former “good name”. Examples are Dürkopp , a former manufacturer of high-quality racing bikes, now owned by China, or NSU , now a brand of ZEG , and Zündapp , now a brand of the supermarket chain Real .
