history
The company was founded in 1976 with five employees in a barn in Waterloo (Wisconsin) , USA. In 1982 the first racing bike was produced , and in 1983 the first mountain bike was produced . In 1989, Trek opened its first non-American offices in the UK and Germany . In 1993 the Gary Fisher company was taken over. Its owner, Gary Fisher, stayed with the company and is still responsible for the bikes that bear his name. In 1995 Trek took over the bicycle manufacturer Klein and the parts supplier Bontrager, followed in 2003 by the bicycle division of the traditional Swiss company Villiger , which also included Diamant , the oldest German bicycle company. In 2014, the Californian bicycle manufacturer electra, founded in 1993, was purchased.
The owner family gave Lance Armstrong a small portion of their property. In contrast, Trek tried to muzzle the Armstrong and doping critic Greg LeMond and parted ways with him as a sponsor. The LeMond brand bicycles have not been actively advertised since then.
