Specialized is an American manufacturer of bicycles and bicycle accessories based in Morgan Hill, California .

history

The company was founded in 1974 by Mike Sinyard. Before it started producing bicycles, however, it only made touring tires. Specialized eventually became more widely known as a mass manufacturer of mountain bikes . In 1981, the Stumpjumper model, the first mass-produced mountain bike, came onto the market. In 1989, Specialized built the first mountain bike with a frame made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic under the name Epic . Since the early 1990s, Specialized has also been selling urban bikes via the Globe model line . In 2009 Globe became its own brand under the Specialized umbrella. In 2001 the Taiwanese bicycle manufacturer Merida took over 49% of the company, most of which have since been bought back.

In the USA, Specialized holds the important patent on the four-bar rear structure. The four-bar linkage with " Horst-Link " was originally patented by Horst Leitner. Specialized acquired the patent from Leitner after the latter withdrew from bicycle construction with his company AMP. Specialized has been cooperating with the Formula 1 racing team McLaren since 2011 . This collaboration resulted in a high-price racing bike called the McLaren Venge .

Specialized has been operating in Germany with Specialized Germany GmbH, based in Holzkirchen , since January 1, 2017 .

Bike customization

With the help of sports medicine specialist Andrew Pruitt from the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine , Specialized developed a comprehensive method of bicycle fitting to optimize ergonomics and performance. The bike is adapted to the athlete in a standardized, five-stage process. The first step is a preliminary interview with the athlete, after which he undergoes a flexibility test. In steps three and four, the sitting position is measured by video from a side and front view of the bike. About a week after the measurement and adjustment process on the bicycle, a follow-up discussion takes place with the athlete, in which he reports on his experiences with the changed settings. Up to now, bike adjustments have not only been made for top athletes from racing such as Vincenzo Nibali or Jakob Fuglsang , but also for many amateur athletes and works for both mountain bikes and racing bikes.

Specialized Pop-Up Store Düsseldorf

On May 5, 2017, Specialized will open a pop-up store on Königsallee in Düsseldorf. The company would like to gain new experience with a temporary shop, from which the company hopes to gain insights into future retail strategies. The focus of this shop is on bikes for so-called urban cycling and e-bikes. A renovation took place after a good month. On the occasion of the start of the Tour de France in Düsseldorf, the store was to be thematically geared towards racing cycling.
