history

The company was founded in 1889 by Charles Idoux and Lucien Chanel in Lyon as a manufacturer and trading company for spare parts for bicycles. Since then, MAVIC has been economically active exclusively in this segment.

Since 1973, Mavic has provided its well-known Service des Courses - an independent route service - at numerous bike races: vehicles loaded with Mavic wheels and complete bicycles always follow the riders on their route. The mechanics on board can change the wheel in the event of a breakdown or, in the event of an accident, a complete exchange of the bike, regardless of the team membership. Since Mavic has never manufactured complete bicycles itself, the neutral service frames are provided by an external manufacturer. Recently, frames from Cannondale and Litespeed have been used for this, in 2006 it was the Scott CR-1 frame.

In 2019 Mavic was sold to the American investment firm Regent LP. On May 2, 2020, Mavic filed for bankruptcy.

In July 2020, the French investment group Bourrelier Group took over Mavic.
