The company's history began in 1683 in Gaggenau in the Black Forest with the founding of a hammer and nail forge, the Gaggenauer Eisenwerke, by Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden . As Gaggenau with the first section of the Murgtalbahn was connected to the railway network, started in 1873. Michael Flürscheim the expansion of the iron works for the first major industrial companies of Murg with a wide range of products. In 1879 the inventor and entrepreneur Theodor Bergmann joined the company, which was subsequently expanded to include an enamelling plant and an art foundry. After Bergmann left in 1893, the product range was concentrated on the construction of bicycles, stoves and cast products. By 1908, 250,000 Badenia brand bicycles had been sold.
