HP Velotechnik is a German bicycle manufacturer specializing in recumbent bicycles and recumbent tricycles .

history

The company HP Velotechnik was founded in 1993 by Paul and Daniel Hollants Pulvermüller. As a schoolboy, the two company founders became national winners with a cabin tricycle in the JUTEC Youth and Technology competition of the Association of German Engineers (VDI). The company manufactures around 2000 recumbent bicycles and tricycles annually in the factory in Kriftel near Frankfurt with 35 employees (including four trainees) . The recumbents are mainly sold in Germany and Europe , some are exported to the USA , Australia and Japan , for example .

According to the daily newspaper taz, the company was the market leader in Germany in 2004 .

In April 2009, for the fourth year in a row, HP Velotechnik was recognized as Germany's best bicycle manufacturer in the supplier evaluation of the VSF bicycle dealers by the industry association Association of Self-Managed Bicycle Companies, as it was in 2011. In 2018, the VSF dealers voted HP Velotechnik in second place, according to the manufacturer with a historical top grade; in 2019 the company was able to achieve the placement again. In June 2017, the company was honored with the Hessian Export Prize , which is awarded every two years, in the craft category. At the end of the same year, the Taunus-Sparkasse awarded the manufactory the German Citizens' Prize as a committed company . In 2019, HP Velotechnik was nominated for the “Grand Prize for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises” and honored with the “AGS Award for Innovation 2019”. In the same year, managing director Paul Hollants - in his own words on behalf of the founding partners and the company - accepted the “Taunus Entrepreneur Award 2019” from the German Association of Medium-Sized Enterprises (BVMW).

Products

The HP Velotechnik range consists of single-track recumbent two- wheelers and three-wheelers (trikes) in the so-called Tadpole design (two wheels at the front, one at the rear). The two-wheelers are mainly short- stay vehicles with the front wheel behind the bottom bracket . The classic is the Street Machine Gte , an all-round and Reiseliegerad , is the built since 1991 and since then continuously developed. The other product range includes the Speedmachine racing machine with a low seating position and the Grasshopper trekking recumbent bike , the foldable version of which Grasshopper fx was awarded the “ Eurobike Award” design prize in 2007 .

Moreover since 2005, the rear suspension trike Scorpion , also known as folding tricycle since 2006. fx Scorpion is available and the Design Prize "in the same year Euro Bike was awarded Award". In 2008, HP Velotechnik presented the Scorpion fs, a fully suspended and foldable recumbent tricycle, the front wheels of which are suspended on MacPherson struts . The Scorpion fs was awarded the “Eurobike Award” 2008 design prize. In spring 2013, the Scorpion fs 26 (awarded as “Recumbent of the Year” 2013 by the “BentRider” magazine) and Scorpion fs 26 S-Pedelec (fast pedelec with electrical assistance up to 45 km / h, design prize “Eurobike Award "2012 and again in 2018 for a heavily revised version) launched, followed in October of the same year by the off-road Scorpion fs 26 Enduro (design prize" Eurobike Award "2013). For the 2014/15 model year, the Scorpion plus 20 (“Eurobike Award” 2014 design prize) and the Scorpion plus 26, two versions with a raised seating position, were presented.

With the Gekko family, HP Velotechnik also has a series of particularly quickly foldable, unsprung tricycles in its range. The beginning of the 2011 model year was the Gekko fx with a 20-inch rear wheel, which was also presented as a version with a frame that could be dismantled for the 2012 season (“ Eurobike Award” design prize in 2011 and 2013). The 2015 model year was followed by the Gekko fx 26 and one year later the Gekko fxs , a tricycle particularly suitable for small people and children. The Gekko fxs is recognized as a medical product, so that you can apply for a reimbursement of costs from health insurance companies (aid number 22.51.02.0061). With the Gekko 26, the series was supplemented in 2018 by a non-foldable entry-level model.

All HP Velotechnik bikes are optionally available with electric motors. Since November 2016, in addition to the - also retrofittable - rear wheel hub motor from GO SwissDrive, the STEPS drive from Shimano has been available as an alternative and since November 2019 the rear wheel hub motor neodrives Z20.

HP Velotechnik also offers recumbent accessories for its own products and third-party products.
