Komenda (bicycle manufacturer)

Komenda AG is a Swiss bicycle manufacturer and wholesaler. The owner-managed family company is based in St. Gallen . The company develops, produces and markets the three own brands Cresta , IBEX and Bergstrom and imports accessories and bicycles for Swiss specialist retailers. In 2017, the internet platform Veloplace, an association of the Swiss bicycle industry, went online on the initiative of Komenda.

history

Komenda was founded in 1898 by Matthias Komenda as a specialist and wholesaler in St. Gallen. At that time, Matthias Komenda was the representative of the Helvetia brand. In 1936 Max Komenda launched the Mako brand (since 1973: Cresta) with frame production and assembly in St. Gallen. In 1942 the Swiss Army was supplied with 1,000 orderly wheels.

The St. Gallen factory is the oldest family-owned Swiss bicycle factory still producing today.

The construction of the current location of Komenda with production and sales under one roof took place in 1970. Frame production was relocated to Sirnach in 1973 , assembly remained in St. Gallen. In 2001 the former Alpa Werke AG in Sirnach was taken over. In addition to production, the Kettler (from 1982) and Giant (1987) brands were added to the sales repertoire as the sole Swiss distributor or importer.

Alexandra Komenda took over the management of the company in 2004 together with her husband Dirk Kurek Komenda (formerly managing director of Giant Germany).
