Maurizio Fondriest (born January 15, 1965 in Cles ) is a former Italian cyclist . In his playing days he was one of the best classics hunters of road cycling .

Career

Fondriest became a professional cyclist in 1987. Just a year later, the then 23-year-old won the road world championships , after having drawn attention at the beginning of the season with a second place at Milan-San Remo . In the following years he won mainly Italian one-day races . He also achieved numerous podium finishes in World Cup races . In 1991 he won the cycling world cup for the first time.

However, his most successful year by far was 1993, when he was able to achieve 28 of his 70 career victories alone. In the jersey of Team Lampre he won, among others, Milan-San Remo , the Fleche Wallone , the championship of Zurich and the stage races Tirreno-Adriatico and Midi Libre . Thanks to his consistency in the classics , he also won the overall ranking of the Cycling World Cup for the second time . In the following years up to the end of his career in 1998, Fondriest was no longer nearly as successful.

Today, Italian racing bikes are manufactured under the name "Fondriest" .
